At the end of the book William Golding sums up what the whole situation for Ralph and how it turned out: “And in the middle of them, with filthy body, matted hair, and unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy”. This sentence is almost the last sentence in William Golding’s novel. Ralph cries out all of his emotions and the terrible things he has been through. Ralph has lost his innocence for good. With all the horrible nightmares Ralph have experienced on the Island, he has witnessed truly evil and betrayal. A remarkable thing in this quote is also that he only mentions piggy and not Simon the reason why he does this is probably because Piggy was his only real friend on the Island and also his first.

In the end they are only kids that was forced into adulthood they had not learned how to properly be an adult and therefore they went with their instincts, which in this case was “the darkness of a man’s heart” which got control over the boys specifically with Jack getting control through brute force with Roger on his side, and the innocence died away with Piggy falling through the air and hitting rock bottom. And with Ralph and the others crying or weeping or weeping their guilt away with the innocence of a child's cry, they brought their innocence back when they realised their reality, not out of the hope of conscience from the men but from the light of a child’s heart.

In the end of the novel, William Golding describes the boys as savages, they have filthy bodies, matted hair and unwiped noses - they are dirty and filthy. The boys goes from being small children to grown adults. In the following quote it shows how the children evolve to being adults:

“And in the middle of them, with filthy body, matted hair, and unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy"

Some of the boys are killing, and some of them not. But they are all growing up on the Island and being adults. The quote “The end of innocence” means that the boys childhood (innocence) ends. The grown ups are ignorant and the man’s heart is dark. The children goes from having a light heart to a dark heart, and the boys get dark hearts because they have done some things on the island so they are not innocent anymore. According to William Golding every man will get a dark heart when the time of innocence ends.

William Golding writes in the end of the book “And in the middle of them, with filthy body, matted hair, and unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy.”

Ralph wept for the end of innocence: It is not like he lost his innocence, it is more like he lost the idea that anyone is innocent. Ralph may have realized that he lost his best friend Piggy and the only innocent one on the Island. Also in the back of the book it says “The end of innocence: For the last time we are reminded of Eden. Is this justified?” Ralph understands that everyone is evil and he realizes he will never be “a child” again.

Williams attitude gets more clear in the quote.

Chased by savages, with death only a few metres behind him, Ralph is beyond all, rescued - had Ralph not been saved by the naval officer, he would have been the next in the line to die. The rescue wasn’t pure joy - the rescue was reality, consequences and suppressed emotions. At the end one must live with the consequences of ones actions.

“And in the middle of them, with filthy body, matted hair, and unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy.”

Piggy’s death symbolized the end of the remaining civilization and order.
