Character v.s Self-
"What I am supposed to wear to such a fancy affair" This quote shows how Matilda struggled with herself and her life. She was very unhappy and figured she would never amount to anything. She overcame this when she went to the party. This represents internal conflict.
Character v.s Society- Pierre says "Here's your coat my dear" But Matilda didn't want to put it on because she didn't want anyone to see her old coat. She had gotten invited to the party, but she didn't want to go because she was afraid of what the wealthy people would think. This represents external conflict.

Greed- The necklace for Matilda symbolizes all that she doesn't have in life, and all that she desires. The necklace also symbolizes her want for others belongings. Greed makes her want the necklace.
Sacrifice- The necklace also symbolizes sacrifice. She wanted the necklace so bad that she wore it carelessly and lost the "expensive" necklace. Her sacrifice was spending ten years paying off the necklace. Just because she wanted to look pretty at a party.

Pride leads to dangerous consequences even if you have a lot of self courage.

This is shown in the text when Matilda wouldn't tell her friend about losing the necklace. If Matilda told her rich friend. She might've not had to buy the necklace back. An example from the text is "Matilda and Pierre decided not to tell Jeanne that they had lost the necklace."
