I remember the first time I went I was shocked by the crowd, I didn't think there would be so many people keen to buy second hand goods. But after I went once I fell in love with it and the bargain prices and variety of styles in carboots really appealed to me.

In China, there are no direct face-to-face second-hand marketplaces like carboots, more second-hand transactions are done online. carboots' grounded approach to selling allows buyers and sellers to make some more connections. This is another area of interest to me.

A month ago, my friend and I tried our own carboots stall and it was quite an exhausting but enjoyable experience. I was amazed at how much unused clothing I had, and satisfied with the joy of redistributing it to people who appreciated them.

The frequent speed of new releases by fast fashion brands has accustomed consumers to a constant flow of new trends and constant fashion changes. Second-hand shopping allows consumers to avoid traditional fashion channels, thus reducing the waste generated by the fashion industry.

‘Impacts from the fashion industry include over 92 million tonnes of waste produced per year and 79 trillion litres of water consumed.‘(Niinimäki et al., 2020).
Due to the huge negative impact of fast fashion on the environment, I think it is essential to promote second-hand clothing trading. Buying second-hand clothes can reduce the waste of resources by reallocating them and can also reduce the direct purchase of fast-fashion clothes to a certain extent.

In contrast to the fungible, antiseptic commodities entombed in layers of plastic from contemporary stores, affectively charged garage sale goods can be alive with feeling and history. They connect people.’(Herrmann, 2015)

‘In the garage sale, transmission of sentiments related to objects is the most salient manifestation of affect. Sellers’ orientations to both mundane and special objects are discursively and extra-discursively transmitted to shoppers in a kinetic matrix of contagion among bodies, who, in response, generate their own affective orientations to the objects. Statements and actions depicting sellers’ attachments, amusement, and even disgust reveal affective orientations that may be shared, dismissed, or modified by buyers; shoppers’ subjectivities are fashioned by and in turn fashion affect in a reflexive manner within the atmosphere largely created by the sellers.’(Herrmann, 2015)

Herrmann(2015) demonstrates the importance of emotion, memory and identity in the yard sale by giving examples of three different emotional models of the flow of used items.

One of the examples of Colleen Caveney selling items with a particular identity gave me something new to think about. She sells items that represent her identity as a wife and items related to raising her children, wanting in this way to officially say goodbye to her ended marriage and motherhood. The purchasers are usually other women who are about to enter this phase. In a way, it's a bit of a transfer of family dreams.

3. Have you ever sold a second-hand item? If so, what were the reasons for selling?


The answers to these questions are so varied that there is no way for me to draw any valid conclusions - they are, after all, all too personal.
And I encountered some problems in asking the questions. Most people's responses to the impressive items they bought at carboot were that there were no impressive items. (I find this very understandable, as most people who shop carboot just want to get the right clothes at a cheap price.)
Collecting buyers' stories became very difficult.

I'm not a person who knows a lot about cameras, it was just that ccd cameras were hot at the time so I picked one up simply based on looks. When I got it, I didn't notice anything special about the camera at first until I was looking through the photo album one day and realised what a difference it made. The memory card in the camera had not been completely erased, and there were still some photos of the original owner living in Japan. There were photos of him with his family as well as some landscape photos he had taken and even some wedding photos. All of these photos are from over a decade ago, yet they created a wonderful feeling in me. Even though I didn't know the seller at all , I felt like I had been a part of his life when I looked at his photos. The camera somehow brought me closer to the original owner - even though we have only met once.

The camera works very well and the previous owner has kept it in excellent condition. It takes pictures with a filter that is unique to the old days. I had no intention of buying a recliner that day, I just suddenly thought it would fit in my home when I saw that recliner and asked the seller for a price.
The seller was a man in his 50s or 60s and his offer was very cheap. As to why I was impressed, it could be because the seller had a very distinctive beard, or because he shared some of his story with me about the chair. He said that in the past he used to carry this chair to his garden and lie on it to read a book. They spent quite a long time together. Now he is moving to a flat and no longer has a garden, and this vintage chair no longer goes with his new modern home, so he has decided to sell it.
For some reason I can always think of him when I lie on it, and sometimes I move the chair into the garden to lie on it and read a book. It's a wonderful feeling to lie on it and read a book, a feeling of some kind of connection with the previous owner.

1. Place the objects according to a certain pattern/rule that has meaning.
2. Reproduce a uniform item or find some similar items of the same type and place them in a random way, where the item itself has meaning.

The area with the cars was more diverse, with significantly more stalls selling sundries and more dated clothing.

As a result, clothes with a high brand value and in very small sizes are not suitable for sale on carboot. I was very surprised and happy and she said she had a very happy day too, she had sold a lot of things, the people here were so friendly and she had had a very nice day so she wanted to give me a ring to share her joy.

She explained that the items she was selling were from the jewellery shop her sister used to run and they had been piling up in her home since the jewellery shop closed. She had a steady income and she was only setting up the stall to make some extra money to spend on taking her mum on holiday.

‘When you get old like me and nearly 60, you have a house full of stuff.' This sentence made me picture.

From my field research, close to 1/3 of the stalls are non-personal. Most of them are owners of vintage shops or professional carboot sellers. I observed how their stall was selling and although they did sell some jewellery, they clearly didn't sell as much as the other stalls (probably because their jewellery was priced at an average of £20+)
When I stopped by their stall, they introduced me to their handmade jewellery and told me about another pop-up market that they would be attending next, and I guessed that the purpose of their carboot was probably more to promote their personal brand than to make a profit. I did a statistic on the different types of sellers that participated:

Children's products: 1
Food and drink: 2
These data are counted by my naked eyes, and may not be 100% accurate, because sometimes you cannot distinguish between two people setting up a stall together or setting up a stall independently of each other.
I am shocked by the statistics. I didn't expect so many sellers to participate, because the total number of participating sellers exceeded a hundred.
But although there are many people involved, there are many non-individual sellers among them. It is easy to distinguish between individual sellers and non-individual sellers. Individual sellers have very low and more casual pricing, while non-individual sellers tend to have higher prices.

8. How are the results of today's sale?

I found a surprising convergence in the answers I received from the interviews. Most of the sellers' sources of knowledge about carboot are from family and friends. Almost all of the sellers said they found it a hassle to take photos of the clothes/items and upload them to the online second-hand platform, and they would prefer to get rid of their unwanted clothes easily and conveniently. Many of the sellers said they liked the atmosphere of the carboot and that they liked the feeling of being there and talking to people face to face. 1. Sometimes excessive democracy can reduce efficiency. In terms of the details of the final format, I feel that one person (the group leader or art director) could have set a uniform standard that would have been implemented by the others directly and separately. In practice, however, our group spent a lot of time in meetings to confirm some formatting details, which I felt was somewhat inefficient. (Our online meeting to confirm typographic details even lasted close to three hours!)

2. good use of resources. I had never been to the archives before this, and didn't even know they were open to the general public. After exploring the archive with Priya and the rest of the group, I found it to be a great and handy repository for books, photos, maps and even tickets. The search function on its website is very powerful and you can get physical copies very quickly after you have booked them.

3. Communication is important. We had students from all over the world in our group, so we all had to communicate in English rather than our native language. This can sometimes be difficult, especially if you are discussing a project with someone from the same country as you but also speaking English. During all the discussions about the project, we communicated in English throughout to make sure that everyone understood. We were very proud of ourselves.

4. Have a sense of time. As this is a group assignment, any delay by one person will cause delays for the whole group. Even though the group leader stressed every step of the ddl, there were still delays.
