         <description><![CDATA[<p><em>Where was the battle and how did geography play a factor?</em></p><ol><li><em>The island has been widely known as Iwo Jima, its conventional name, since World War II (1939–45);Iwo Jima lies in the western Pacific at a point about 760 miles (1,220 km) south-southeast of&nbsp;<b>Tokyo</b>.</em></li></ol><em><p>The dominating terrain was Mount Suribachi, an extinct volcano 550 feet high on the southwest tail of the island.&nbsp;</p><p>Northeast of Mount Suribachi was a flat lowland. This area was covered by a heavy layer of black volcanic sand. Wave action on the coast had carved steep terraces of eight to fifteen feet in height in the shoreline. This area rose to about 50 feet above sea level and was sparsely vegetated. It offered practically no cover.</p></em>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><em>What strategies did each&nbsp; of the groups involved in the fighting use to try winning the battle?</em></p><p>1) The Japanese didn’t fight above ground. They fought the battle entirely from beneath the ground. They dug 1,500 rooms into the rock. These were connected with 16 miles of tunnels. 2) Japanese strategy called for “no Japanese survivors.” They planned not to survive. 3) Japanese strategy was for each soldier to kill 10 Americans before they themselves are killed.- Americans to survive </p>]]></description>
