On the other hand, Sara Pennypacker’s novel Clementine and the Spring Trip is based on a third grader, Clementine, who learns how to deal with bullies and break silly rules. Although the two books may tell two drastically different stories and are targeted at different audiences, both the books pay a lot of attention to the protagonists’ relationship with other characters in the novels, particularly with parents and peers. While is it obvious that characters in Hard Love make use of smaller pieces of writing within the novel to describe themselves and communicate with other characters, Clemetine and Spring Trip does a similar job with use of artwork. Age is also a factor, John is older so he writes, but clementine is younger so she draws - is this a common assumption?
