Sputnik sent out in October of 1957 by the Soviet's. This could be looked at as the start of the space race. People believed that the satellite would be able to used for bombings.

The U.S. in 1962 sent there first man to orbit the earth. 
John Kennedy urged the importance of winning the space race because he didn’t the people of the world  to think the Soviet’s were better. JFK promised that we would send a man to the moon by the end of the decade and in 1969 man stepped on the moon. 
-Step four of turning the the Cold War, hot is to is to dissolve the importance of the space race. The space race could be seen as a distraction form the the main war at hand. The space race was a war of sending things into space not a ground fight. If there was no space race what would the soviets and no communists fight over.

The operation failed when the ships carrying the men hit coral and the air reinforcements were called off.  This lead to the Cuban missal crisis when the soviets placed nuclear missals in Cuba. There was an eventual agreement between the United Sates and the Soviets. 
-The Fifth and final step of turning the Cold War hot is the strategically following through with the bay of pigs operation.
