When I make mistakes (which happens all the time), I used to be extremely self conscious about it. I would come down on myself very harshly. I have come to learn that I can not be correct or do anything perfectly the first time. It took a long time to figure this out but I think I truly feel now, that it is ok, even good to make mistakes. In the book, the author says "Some people have failed their way to the top." This really resonated with me in that the more I am ok with making mistakes, the more risks I am willing to take. When I take risks, I become better and better at what I do. Realizing the importance of being ok with mistakes has allowed me to think differently about my approach as I teach or coach. Pointing out where I have made mistakes and explaining how I recognized I made a mistake and how the mistake was fixed or improved makes me more relatable as a coach and as a teacher when working with students. Explaining this to teachers and students has allowed them to be ok with making mistakes and talking about it with me.

I have a lot of anxiety around making mistakes. I tend to internalize them and used to view them as failures and a reflection of who I was as a person. I am so much more patient with my students, and that has helped me to be more patient with myself. I can't teach my students that it is okay to take risks and make mistakes if that is something that I am not trying to practice in my own life. It is something that I have to work towards every day...the fear of making mistakes has been ingrained in me since childhood. I think you have to work hard to build genuine relationships with students and celebrate small victories and learning moments to create a culture of risk-taking and creativity in the classroom. As a special education teacher, I often have to work to build confidence in students who feel like they are bad at school or wonder "what's the point?" GIF added below to show how I used to (and often still do) feel about making mistakes. I'm sure many of our students feel the same way.
