I tend to internalize them and used to view them as failures and a reflection of who I was as a person. I am so much more patient with my students, and that has helped me to be more patient with myself. I can't teach my students that it is okay to take risks and make mistakes if that is something that I am not trying to practice in my own life. It is something that I have to work towards every day...the fear of making mistakes has been ingrained in me since childhood. I think you have to work hard to build genuine relationships with students and celebrate small victories and learning moments to create a culture of risk-taking and creativity in the classroom. As a special education teacher, I often have to work to build confidence in students who feel like they are bad at school or wonder "what's the point?"
