What does a scientist look like?

Most of the students said a scientist is a old white man with crazy gray hair and a white coat with goggles. There were a few students who said that girls can do it too. They drew themselves as a scientist. I thought that was really cool that they can see themselves as scientists and they don't think it is a job just for guys.

Students were beyond engaged through inquiry-based learning. Students are able to be responsible for their learning as they think deeply about questions, create their own questions, present their findings, and reflect on their findings.

Incorporating reading with science

I read the story, Ada Twist Scientist, to my students as an opener to our science lesson. Most of my kindergartner students didn't know much about scientists, but after reading this story we found some examples of what scientists do. Using a story to help introduce a new topic is a great way to get students excited to learn. After we read the story, my students were thrilled to do a hands on science activity and relate their experiences to the character from the story. My students were eager to answer questions and think critically about the things they were observing during their experiments. Not only were we learning about science, we used literacy skills to help define new terms. Stories can be used for all sorts of different subjects to help introduce new topics to students in a way that is easy for them to understand.

STREAM TEACHING

My stream lesson centered around a lesson about energy, propulsion, and thrust. We examined the chemical reactions that occur when rockets are launched into space. In order to recreate what we have learned, we hypothesized how a balloon can be used as a rocket to blast from one chair to another. Students were put into teams and given supplies to try and make their balloon rockets blast from one chair to another. We truly got to experience a science experiment, and write our report for why our design worked to share with the class.

Science is for everybody!

An important part of STEM/STREAM outreach is making science, engineering, and mathematics appealing and engaging for all students. When I asked my students what a scientist looks like, a lot of the responses centered around the stereotype of a lab coat and glasses wearing male. My little girlies in the room didn’t think they could be scientists! The important message of the discussion then became the idea that ANYONE CAN BE A SCIENTIST. And girl scientists can wear dresses and study volcanoes! The drawing aspect incorporated art into the idea that science is merely exploring idea that you are curious about, and then researching your ideas.
