The most common cause of obesity is a combination of hyperenergetic diet, lack of exercise and genetic susceptibility. Some cases are caused by genes, endocrine diseases, medications or mental disorders. There is no evidence to support a slow metabolism as a cause of obesity in obese people who eat little. On average, obese people consume more energy than the rest, since the greater the body mass, the greater the need for energy.
