During this scene one of the German soldiers purposely knocks a clock off a table that is very important to the Bornstien family. This is important because it shows how little the soldiers care about any Jews and how far they would go to hurt them.

During this scene Michael and his mom reunite for the first time since she left Auschwitz. Michael is in shock because he believes that his mom is dead because he was told there was a fire at the factory she works at. Michael is also unsure because the last time he thought someone was his mom he was disappointed to realize it was his aunt. This is important because it shows how much love michael and his mother have and it shows people DO make it out of traumatic events with their families.

During this scene Germans come knocking on michaels family Shabbat dinner. They are trying to hurt them and call them dirty Jews, but aunt Hilda claims they aren’t and takes them up to Ruth’s room, who used to live in a Christian orphanage. Hilda tells Ruth to say her prayers and she does and proves they are a catholic household. This is important because everyone though that Ruth being in the catholic orphanage was a bad thing but on this night it saved all their lives.

During this scene Michael and his grandmother had just been liberated from Auschwitz. As the soldiers are filling out paperwork for them and asking questions, one asks where michaels parents are and his grandmother replies that they are dead. Michael doesn’t want to believe this and thinks his mother is still alive. This is important because this is the first of many times Michael is told that his mother has passed away when he doesn’t believe it.

This is important because it shows that not all soldiers and heart less and some of them care about the Jews, even if it’s just a little.

During this scene the Judenrat and Michaels dad are trying to help the Jewish families around their ghetto by opening a soup kitchen. Most of the families are too proud to take the food and feel bad about themselves. So, the judenrat takes it into their own hands to hand deliver the soups to houses. This is important because it shows how much then Jewish leaders care about their community.
