Light vs Darkness - Quite literally, the characters are segregated by skin color between black and white. As they move deeper in the country, Marlow calls the jungle the heart of darkness.
Imperialism - The native people are constantly oppressed by European powers whether the pilot that preceded Marlow or the French Man O war or the el Dorado Expedition.
Appearance vs Reality - Throughout the book, the jungle appears to be peaceful and calm. However, in reality, people are dying from exposure, disease and conflict with the natives. In addition, Marlow mentions his aunt's point of view that the Europeans are there to civilize the natives.
