Yellowstone

The United States has many extraordinary natural monuments. The largest among them - and arguably the most impressive - is the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Founded in 1872, the park of about nine-thousand square kilometres holds a wide arrangement of some of the most beautiful natural phenomenon in the country. Every year an approximate of two million people visit the park to witness its wonders. A lot of whom stay in lodging and campsites.

The park largely consists of woods, housing a large variation of wildlife some of which are considered dangerous to humans, like grizzly bears and wolves. This is why visitors have to follow safety instructions if they intend to actively seek out these animals. But Yellowstone Park also has much cherished passive wildlife like bison, elk, deer, moose and pronghorn. The parks diverse ecological environments, like snowy mountains, stretched out plains and long rivers, make it a home for many different species.

Aside for its wildlife, Yellowstone Park is very well known for its hydrothermal wonders. Yellowstone itself is a partially active – but mostly inactive - volcano that spreads immense heat throughout parts of the land, rapidly evaporating cold water with immense pressure and thus creating over two hundred of its world famous geysers. It’s most famous geyser is Old Faithful. This geyser blasts out a forty-five meter high spout of water and steam every ninety-two minutes or so with a temperature of about two hundred degrees Celsius. Aside from its geysers, Yellowstone Park also holds a large amount of hot springs supported by bright white limestone created by volcanic processes. Yellowstone volcano is one of the most powerful volcanoes in the world, granting it the name ‘super volcano’. Geologists claim that Yellowstone is to erupt every 600.000 years, resulting in a gigantic catastrophe for that reaches most of the planet called a ‘volcanic winter’: an event that fills the world’s skies with thick layers of ash, blocking out all of the sunlight and thus killing off most of the plant- and animal life. Yellowstone volcano’s last eruption was estimated to take place about 640.000 years ago. This is why people wonder if we are yet again at the brink of a disastrous explosion. Luckily, according to these same Geologists the volcano is showing signs that its previous eruption was its last one, and it will now spend its next eternity completely dormant.

The 24th of Juli 1969 marked an important date that according to many Americans held one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. An accomplishment that was claimed to be entirely realized by the United States of America. This achievement was of course the Apollo 11 space shuttles successful landing on the moon. American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were the first human beings to step foot on the most famous space-rock of all that day. After planting the US flag and gathering some material for geological research, they returned to their shuttle and flew back to planet earth.

Apollo’s moon-landing was the climax of a 14 year long space race between the USA and the USSR, who had been competing to be the first nation in the world to achieve various breakthroughs in the human space-exploration. The USSR had a long and early lead by being the first to launch a satellite – Sputnik 1 –, followed by their achievement of launching the first life-form into space – Laika the Dog – and finally the first human – Yuri Gagarin. Former US president John F. Kennedy decided to ‘raise the stakes’ with a goal to land the first man on the moon and return him safely to earth.’ The US began investing large amounts of money in NASA’s space program, enabling the company to creating a successful moon mission in a relatively short amount of time. Up until today there is still arguing over whoever won this space-race.

Seattle Grunge

Grunge is a musical genre that originated from the American city of Seattle, Washington in the late 1980’s and saw a peak in worldwide popularity in the early nineties.

Culturally, Grunge was a result of a generational tradition to reject its predecessors. It largely sparked from the wide distribution of Hair Metal and Glam Metal, both of which were commercially exploited by low-grade bands with unoriginal songs after the initial success of well performing bands like Kiss. Grunge is a combination of heavy metal and punk rock that brings it to a lower pace to create music that often sounds ominous and dark. Seattle had a large underground music scene at the time that was popular at many progressive schools and universities, which was essential to the mainstream spread of the genre throughout the rest of the world.

The four most popular Seattle-based grunge bands were Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. All of whom despised the label ‘grunge’ because of its potential to be commercialised, which conflicted with the feelings of repulsion for mainstream cash-in bands that shaped their music. Grunge was often disliked by the conservative population because it contained lyrics about taboo topics like depression and rape.

The mainstream interest in Grunge arguably took a halt with the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994. However, some claim that the genre was laid to rest for good after the death of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley in 2002.

Steve Jobs

‘A pioneer in the computer-industry’ is how many computer engineers describe Steven Paul Jobs, the former CEO of Apple Computer based in the state of California. Jobs’ many daring and creative experiments with computer-building made him one of the most famous people in the world. His sharp mind for innovation caused many breakthrough inventions that made his company billions, if not trillions of dollars. Jobs was one of the creators of the Macintosh – the first consumer computer with a graphical user interface - and the computer mouse. One of his final breakthroughs was considered to be the iPhone: the first multifunctional telephone with a touchscreen interface.

Jobs didn’t create most of these inventions on his own. In 1977, after having worked at Atari for a few years, he founded Apple Computer with his colleague Ronald Wayne and his old school-buddy Steve Wozniak. Jobs was known for his fondness for design. Every aspect of his creation has to be ‘perfect’, including the packaging. His love for design was reflected by the way he dressed: slick, clean and minimalistic.

Aside from his inventions, Steve Jobs was also known for his outstanding and gripping presentations. He managed to leave his audience hanging on every word he said. He used simple language and presented with infectious excitement. Jobs also used slides with very little words and a simple image, causing the image to have more impact. Once again contributing to the minimalistic design that he embodied.
