Many women are killed each year with an average study showing that discrimination kills 239,000 girls in India each year under the age of 5. About 2.4 million deaths have occurred in a decade (not including prenatal deaths). 
Gender equality has been shown to do more with the care, nutrition, and survival of girls than education in India. This means that the problem is much bigger than just equality in classrooms but the chances of girls surviving. Right from the womb women are told to abort their babies if they are female just because of how badly they are treated. Once these girls grow up they are often forced to marry at a young age and don't have much of an education or childhood.
Other countries and India were studied to determine the amounts of excessive mortality rates of girls. The results were shocking and showed 29 out of 35 Indian states had overall excess mortality in girls under five. All Indian states and territories, apart from two, contained at least one district with excess mortality compared to other countries without gender discrimination. Rape, dowry death, and honor killings are a big part of this problem.

Respect for women should also be taught to both males and females at a young age. A big reason for gender discrimination is the lack of educating on gender equality among young girls. If they aren't aware of anything but gender stereotypes, nothing will change.
Another solution could be putting more women into power or just jobs in general. Women need to stand up for themselves and begin to break out of the stigma around them staying home to cook and clean. More women could feel like they could do something with their lives by showing them that they can have aspirations and follow them. Two of the main reasons are the idea of the Dowry Tradition and women considered as a liability. 
     The Dowry Tradition is when the bride's family gives the groom's family money or gifts. This is after the woman is married into the family. This tradition is supposedly illegal however, people still do this practice. Women's lives revolve mostly around traditions and customs that are centuries old.
  Women are considered a liability because they do not bring in income for their families. Women are said to be emotionally and economically dependent on men. Daughters are also a liability because they cannot do any physical work. Men are treated better than women in multiple fields. Some of these fields being nutrition and health benefits  as well as education. Thirdly, men are treated more as assets to the Indian community and their families more than women.
       Sons are celebrated in the Indian culture. This is because men can carry on the family surname (last name) to more generations. In addition, men also bring a wife into the family. This wife can help support this man's family now by doing chores and activities around the house.  Men are considered capable of earning money while women are not. This money can help men provide for the aging parents. Men are also an important role in death rituals. In this ritual, the soul is released from the body and can go into heaven. Indian people believe in reincarnation making this a very important ritual.
 In the nutrition and health field more care is given to men. These two factors are intertwined with each other. Men are given the food when their is a lack of resources. Women and girls have a higher malnutrition rate. This causes women to never reach their full growth and causes anemia. Anemia is when your body lacks red blood cells or hemoglobin. In turn, this causes pregnancy issues. 
Women also have less literacy rates. The literacy rate for men in 76% while women literacy rates are 54%. Men are mostly required to attend school. Men usually have their wives do the chores so they work more out of the house jobs.  Women are also treated more as sex objects than men. More women have been raped and sex trafficked than men. More sexual assaults happen to women than men.  
Women are killed simply because of their bodies and their makeups.
