As I always say to my family and students "Everything in moderation". I think many parents would like to let teachers do their work, let their children take responsibility , but also stay aware of what's happening at school.
Chrysanthi

What i have realized is that many of the parents did not go to Greek school themselves. As a result, they might speak the language but they are not able to transfer accurate knowledge to their offsprings. Same with the grandparents. That is common especially in Canada. Thus, they realize that teachers at school are educated and they rely on them. They are reluctant because they are afraid of doing something wrong and sometimes feel insecure.
Anthoula

Some times parents seem to be reluctant to get involved because they do not speak the Greek language fluently themselves. As a result, they do not feel confident enough to help or explain the lessons/homework to their children. That, in combination with the parents being generally busy in their lives, they just decide not to bother and just be happy and satisfied with whatever their children learn from school.
Dimitra Kanellakos

One of the reasons that parents may be reluctant to be involved in their children's study of the Greek language may be their lack of proficiency in the language. They may feel inadequate to help due to their limited knowledge. Another reason may be they don't have the time or energy to get involved. Their days are full with work or various programs. Many kids are over programmed leaving little to no time for homework. Parents may want to assist but can't not because of competency but due to a lack of time.

Anna Nikol

There are several reasons that parents may be reluctant...One may be the lack of knowledge(they don't know the language well enough); another could be the lack of time(too busy with extra curricular activities /work long hours/ a lot of other commitments) and another the lack of interest (they are happy with whatever their child learns on their own). I think that if we can turn around the lack of interest and get the parents thinking that their child can do a lot better with their help and support, that would be a great achievement.
Theofano

...would be that they themselves do not have a commanding knowledge of the language; wether they never learned it (typical in mixed marriage families), or never used it since they went to school and therefore have become "rusty" at it. Perhaps, as educators, we haven't reached out to / educated them appropriately.
Dimitrios M.

Some parents are dropping off their kids to the Greek School and they look more stressed and anxious than their kids. They may be reluctant to get involved because Greek School for them was a bad experience. (traditional teaching approach, miss the Saturday fun, low performance)

There are a number of factors that affect involvement. I believe some families have time constraints given all the events the students and families are involved in (hockey, piano, gymnastics, regular school and so on). Then there are the cultural and linguistic barriers of mixed families or even second and third generational families. In other cases, motivation may be a factor... that is, the kid is brought cause the grand parent would be disappointed if it wasn't, but the parents really do not care whether the kid is there or not. It can also be that we are not clear as educators what we expect of them. Maybe there are ways to engage them using their strengths and interests.
