Today Canada closely resembles the U.S. in its market-oriented economic system and pattern of production. ... International trade makes up a large part of the Canadian economy, particularly of its natural resources. In 2009, agriculture, energy, forestry and mining exports accounted for about 58% of Canada's total exports.

Although Canada is a predominantly English-speaking country, there are francophone communities throughout its provinces. In fact, according to the 2016 census, French is the native language of around 7.2 million Canadians—or about 20 percent of the total population. Most native French-speakers live in Quebec, where it is the majority official language. Here is an overview of the French language in Canada. In 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier ventured across the Atlantic in search of a more direct route to Asia. He reached the shores of Newfoundland and what are now Canada’s Maritime Provinces, and mapped the area of Gulf of Saint Lawrence. During this time, he attempted to claim the region for France, erecting a 10-meter cross with the words Long Live the King of France, which caused conflict among the area’s Cartier returned for two subsequent voyages, and although he did not quite succeed in establishing a permanent settlement, Canada’s French roots were laid by the time of his death in 1557.Importantly, Cartier was the first to use the name “Canada” to refer to the lands that he had explored along the banks of the Saint Lawrence River. The name is a misinterpretation of the local indigenous word “kanata,” or “village,” which he thought designated the surrounding land and river. He used the term “Canadians” to refer to the Iroquoians he had met there, and the name Canada was used to refer to the small French colony that developed in the region, and the French colonists were called Canadians.

Canada has a rich agricultural and farming heritage producing food and animal products. They are classed as ‘big eaters’ particularly of meat.

Traditionally most families have three meals a day which includes breakfast, lunch and the main meal of the day dinner which is eaten in the evening.

Canada has a large and diverse ethnic population spread across the nation so that there are significant variations of traditional meals and foods.

Popular foods in Canada include: ‘poutine’ which originates from Quebec and consists of French fries and cheese topped with brown gravy, Canadian ‘pea meal’ bacon which comes from the loin of pork and has been bribed and rolled in cornmeal. Maple syrup is also a great favorite along with doughnuts, butter tarts and pancakes.

There is no given standard for literary tradition in Canada as its British roots lean towards English literature. There are however, many internationally known writers in Canada including authors such as Margaret Atwood (the Handmaid’s Tale), L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables) and Robert Munch (Love you Forever).

There are a number of government funded art galleries in most provinces and Canada has produced artists in all media. There are also a numerous smaller galleries and cooperatives offering support to new artists.

In the performing arts, Canada has many theaters throughout the country; particularly in the larger cities. The nature of theater varies from musical to small community based companies. There are several companies specializing in English literature including the Stafford Shakespeare Festival and the Shaw Festival which takes place on a yearly basis and is based in Ontario.
