The Learning Process

I have found this topic to be really helpful. From my current teaching job I am always keen to hear feedback and to see what I have discussed in a theory class to see what has been retained. I would most likely use the formative technique a lot as I like to reflect back often to gauge how the student has understood things. I will definitely be using these techniques more often and incorporating them in my class. I have tried using online culinary games, paper handouts of crosswords etc and big card games all to address the topics but all in different ways.

I delivered a food standard assessment, I do this on the 2nd day of the intake. After delivering the topic at the end of the day I went through the entire food standard and quizzed everyone. Each time I quizzed one inparticular student struggled while others did it with ease. When it came to marking the tests papers with one final re run of what was spoken about the student still struggled. Her test paper was a huge reflection of her learning difficulties. Had I known this student had difficulty with theory/English/literacy I would have had some extra help available and myself would have given further help. I believe this would come under the formative assessment and would of helped the progress with the student.

Create something: This is an assessment tool that I use in my classes and they are mostly very successful. I think that they could be used more often as they can stimulate great conversations and peer to peer assessments when creating an environment and opportunity to share their 'creation'. This assessment works well in the draughting field, when problems arise during the creation, these are invaluable in giving students real-life experience in problem solving.

Exit slip: I would definitely like to give this a go and determine how often Icould use it. I see it as a great reflection tool for the students and I will also be able to gain feedback from those who are more quiet.

We play BINGO a lot as we near the end of a topic. It's a great way of evaluating learning. Each student has a BINGO card with a bunch of answers on it, I will ask questions and they need to cross the answer on their card. The great thing about this formative assessment is that it can be adapted to suit any level and any subject. Students love it and it's quick.

I recently gave a instructional lesson in my class performing a treatment on a student, I then got the class to walk a peer through the same treatment on another student.
his helped to see if they had retained the information they were given and if they understood it clearly enough to relay it.

Kahoots: I use this a lot in class, it is an online based quiz maker, that you can set questions for relating to your subject.
In class your students can all connect with their phones, and verse each other to get the answers right and score points. The students love this.

Amanda

We play a quiz as we get around half way through our programme, in small groups each group has a pen & paper, I ask questions relevant to what our students have learnt as a group they work out the answers, answers are given after quiz is ended normally after 15 questions, this formative assessment is a great way to see how much information can be recalled. This is a quick easy tool to use and is a lot of fun.
Maraea
