Lots of freedom with exploring on websites which is helpful so when we get in groups we aren’t wasting time figuring out how it works. I think form got in the way for one of our portfolio submissions, I felt like it was fun to just play chords and write but I totally forgot about form as I found it restricting so early in the writing process. Too much freedom for me for our final project… I’m too indecisive and I had to many half ideas but nothing solid to get started on.

It has also provided me with some useful applications to produce and features in those applications that Joel demonstrated in class. They are pretty universal features and now when in the future I come across more advanced applications I'll be familiar with the features and it won't be so intimidating. :)

In ways it was nice to be able to do whatever I wanted, but I am definitely someone who thrives off of structure so this has been a bit challenging for me. In terms of the sample composition project, I felt that I had just the right amount of freedom and structure because we were given a set up guidelines to follow and a rubric of what was expected.

I find for the group difficult with 3 people and formatting everything. BandLab is trick and I’m still struggling with learning how to use it. I liked that we could use sounds we hear in nature but also adding in chord progressions melody and bass line I find is way to much work and is very hard for new people to composing. The aba feels very restrictive and we couldn’t really enjoy our own creating process

The four chord loop assignment: I felt restricted. I usually begin my song writing with a vocal melody that I think of or just "noodling" on guitar to find a riff (then I make the chord progression fit this), so I agree that freedom does need to come before structure. Having to stick to the same chord progression for verse and chorus was frustrating a bit. On the other hand, it was a good exercise for me because it's different than my normal process.

I found myself naturally wanting to add in a pre-chorus in the pop song, and actually begin with the chorus as opposed to the verse. It took a little bit of conscious thought to fit the verse-chorus structure required for the assignment. However, I’m really enjoying the amount of freedom for the final project, and have been finding that it’s enriching my understanding of form as a whole in terms of the many possibilities that there could be. The structure for creating the group composition was really helpful, as I actually did not have many ideas to begin with in terms of using the sounds around me. It was also helpful to be in pairs, since it helped to bounce ideas around with someone else.
