1. What is ANZAC and ANZAC day?

April the 25th, is the anniversary of the day Australian and New Zealand Army Corps fought for Great Britain. We call it ANZAC day. It is a day where New Zealand and Australia remember those killed in the war and where we honour all the returned service men and women. The reason why we mourn the deaths and honour those who have survived on April the 25th is because that is the day when the ANZAC's landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Gallipoli is where Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, France, Ireland, India, Newfoundland and many other countries fought for their homeland against Turkey. Unsuccessfully the ANZAC's and other Allies retreated. Losing the battle.

Navy officer Winston Churchill put forward his plans to attack the Gallipoli Peninsula and eventually the British Cabinet approved the attack and invasion of Turkey in January 1915. The reason why the ANZAC's had ti fight is, since the New Zealanders and Australians are part the British Commonwealth it was their duty to fight for Great Britain. As the saying goes "for king and country". The Gallipoli campaign took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula in between the 25th of April 1915 and the 9th of January 1916.

It was difficult as when the ANZAC and other Allied soldiers invaded, the Turkish soldiers were all set and ready for the attack. The Turks had many big weapons that the ANZAC's didn't have and they were also up on high ground and could shoot down on the ANZAC's easily. All the ANZAC and allied soldiers would not be able to shoot back as they had no idea where the bullets were coming from. ANZAC's had to try and find shelter or start climbing up the mountain to find a hole or scrubs to hide in.

The experience for most of the soldiers would have been hard, frightening, nerve-racking and scary. The soldiers would have been starving and probably barely got any sleep. They also had to work very hard to stay alive and alert for any danger or secret attacks. The reason why Maori's were never aloud to be apart of the war but then were aloud was because of a policy where native people were not aloud to fight in what was seen as a 'white man's war'. The New Zealand Government changed the rules once they found out that African and Indian troops would participate in the conflict.

Chunuk Bair is important to New Zealand because this is where the Maori's were aloud to fight alongside the white New Zealanders and actually be apart of the war and be heroes. This is a place to remember the sacrifice and the bravery that these soldiers showed in protecting their country.

6. Why Gallipoli is important?

Even though the ANZAC'S didn't win the war. Gallipoli is a very important place as this is where the ANZAC'S had battled against the Turks. A lot of men and women were killed or wounded and we will remember there bravery. It was an unsuccessful war that didn't really seem to change anything. But by the end of the campaign 130 000 people had died and 123 600 were wounded and 7700 were either missing or prisoners. That is a lot of people and I feel so sorry for the families, who's sons, husbands, brothers or wives were killed, missing or prisoners, it must have been heartbreaking. The reason why Gallipoli is thought about by New Zealanders is so families can remember them as a hero that fought for there country, to remember how proud they were of them and remember happy memories they had cherished.

After doing the Gallipoli lesson I have learnt more than before I started. I have learnt how brave and hard working the soldiers were and had learnt more about why the ANZAC's had attacked Gallipoli. I have know learnt a lot more about ANZAC day and the ANZAC's.
