Science: Paleobotany: Fossil tree that lived before dinosaurs is found in Brazil:

Weighing around two tons, the trunk is one of the largest ever found at the Teresina paleontological site

Researchers found a fossil of a tree that lived around 280 million years ago in Altos, a city 40 km from Teresina, in Piauí, in northeastern Brazil. At this age, the plant lived in the Paleozoic Era, prior to the appearance of dinosaurs on Earth and even the division of continents.

The trunk fossil weighs approximately two tons and is the second largest of its kind ever found at the Parque Floresta Fóssil paleontological site.Although researchers frequently monitor the site, the fossilized tree had gone unnoticed. This is because it is in a coca palm forest, making it difficult to locate. However, this “common stone” caught the attention of scientists last Thursday, November 23, 2023.

Looking at the section you can see that it is circular and has growth rings, meaning it was a tree. From the side it is possible to see some of the old bark and the direction of growth of the firewood. According to Cisneros, a set of factors explains the origin of a fossil of this type. Normally, the tree dies due to fungi and degradation caused by animals. However, for it to go through the fossilization process, it must be covered in mud.

In this case, the mud prevents the tree from rotting. However, for it to become a fossil, this mud must be rich in silica, an abundant mineral on Earth. In this way, the silica is gradually diluted in the mud, enters the tree's cells and replaces the water with the mineral – a process that takes thousands of years.This incredible fossilization process occurred in other trees in Parque Floresta Fóssil, in Teresina. According to a survey carried out in 2016, Cisnero said that there are more than 70 petrified trunks at the site.

Bob Roach’s excellent recent talk about the early alkali industry in the North West briefly mentioned the recent technology development by TATA Chemicals on CCU. CO2 is stripped out the exhaust gas from the CHP (Combined Heat and Power) plant using an amine and the recovered CO2 is stored for future use. The amine is recycled and reused. The stored CO2 is then utilised in the Solvay process to manufacture sodium bicarbonate. A key point to remember is that the CO2 is utilised in a chemical process rather than stored as a waste.
