A monster. I feel like Grendel was born innocent to two monsters, and since he looks like a monster and his parents were monsters everyone just assumed he was bad. I picture him trying to find happiness and failing. So, everyone pictured him being bad and blocked him out without giving him a chance so he turned into a monster. At the end of Annotation #2, Grendel gets infuriated because the people are singing and they're happy even after Grendel just attacked them, and Grendel can't stand hearing or seeing others be happy. Although i have a distinct picture of Grendel in my head, this picture is the closest one i can find.

I think that Grendel would listen to sad and depressing music. Mostly because he doesn't like loud noises so he wouldn't listen to scream-o or anything like that, and also he is depressed, he can't seem to find happiness anywhere so I imagine him listening to Rascal Flatts- What Hurts the Most. It's not really about anything Grendel is sad about but i feel like he's just so depressed about absolutely everything that it doesn't really matter. I picture him being all scary and mad to everyone else but then when he's alone in his cave at night, he's just sad and lonely. I feel like Grendel is judged so much that people kind of made him into a monster so he's just giving them what they want. I don't think Grendel ever meant to hurt anyone he was just kind of born into his role as a "monster". I see Grendel as listening to really sad music.

I chose to post Andrew Vogler's picture of Grendel because it looks very similar to mine. Andrew is in 7th period. In his image post he states that Grendel gets very mad because people are happy and I said the same thing in mine. We shared very similar thoughts about what Grendel looked like based on the context of the story and the description of Grendel's character. Overall, as I read through Andrew's post about how Grendel looks in his mind it really reminded me of my post. I think we shared the same thinking of how Grendel is portrayed in the story. Slaying Monsters is an article by Joan Acocella about a man named John Ronal Reuel Tolkien. This man translated the poem Beowulf in 1926 when he was 34 years old. He loved medieval stories. When he was finished with the translation he put it in a drawer and never published it. 40 years after he died his son found it in a drawer and he published it. The original Beowulf was written in Britain. Beowulf defeats three successive monsters. Grendel, Grendel's mother and a Dragon. Few people could read the original text of Beowulf in Old English because it was so difficult so most people didn't, and those who did, didn't want to and most likely didn't understand it. This man made it easier to read and understand. If it wasn't for him some people may have never experienced this wonderful poem. If his son didn't find it then it would've gone to waste.
