Spanish had much success in colonizing the Americas. King Philip II of Spain amassed an ‘Invincible Armada'. This armada attacked the ‘English Sea Dogs’ however the English fought with more tact and swiftness, causing much damage to Spanish ships. A devastating storm, known as the “Protestant Wind” decimated the Spanish fleet, thus marking the end of Spain’s domination of the Americas. The victory over the Spanish armada invoked a sense of nationalism in the English, and when a peace treaty was signed in 1604 between the two the English’s patriotic spirit still prevailed.
