Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS)

This survey is given to students and provides quick questions to see how they feel about reading. The students are given four pictures of Garfield and have to circle the one that shows how they feel in regards to the question they are given. The Garfield's range from very positive to very negative. The teacher then scores the survey based on the responses from the student.

Illiteracy Statistics

During my studies with the illiteracy statistics, I found it to be very shocking and sad that so many people in our world cannot read. 50% of Americans read poorly and cannot complete day to day tasks and activities. 44 million adults are unable to read to their children. Illiteracy is such a huge and overwhelming problem in our world. As teachers, I feel that it is our job to give our students the tools and resources they need to become successful readers. I also try to help my parents by giving them the resources to help their children with reading outside of the classroom.

Reading Models

The reading models video we had to watch for this course really gave me lots of insight in regards to the three different approaches to reading. The three models that were focused on in the video were the Top Down Model, The Bottom Up Model, and the Interactive Model. The Top Down Model is a linear approach and focuses on the mind of the reader. The Bottom Up Model is also a linear approach but it mainly focuses on the text and the information really flows from the text that the child is reading. The last approach is the Interactive Model which really is a nice balance of the Top Down and Bottom Up models. The Interactive Model has students use their knowledge about words, letters, and sounds and allows them to construct their own meaning from the text they're reading. This model shows the importance of word knowledge which aids comprehension. A student cannot be expected to comprehend a story without proper knowledge of words and sounds. A child cannot comprehend without a combination of the two (word knowledge and sounds help yield comprehension).

This article also provided many different types of interventions to use with the type of thinker your student is. I found this article very beneficial and I will definitely be going back to it as a reference as a current first grade teacher and when I become a Reading Specialist.

The assessment I researched for this course was The Observation Survey developed by Marie Clay. The Observation Survey is given to students individually and can be administered by a classroom teacher or reading specialist. This assessment is geared toward students in the primary grades. It includes six specific tasks in which you test your student on. You can choose to administer all tasks to your student OR you can pick and choose which of the six you'd like to administer. The six tasks are: Letter Identification, Word Tests, Concepts About Print, Writing Vocabulary, Hearing and Recording Sounds in Words, and Text Reading. I really enjoyed researching this assessment and plan to use it in my first grade classroom! Prior to this course, I had never heard of this assessment before!

In this course I had the opportunity to administer the CRI to one of my first grade students. Prior to taking this course, I had never heard of the CRI before. I had the opportunity to administer word lists, passages, and comprehension questions to my student to find his independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels. I really enjoyed administering the CRI and was able to find out a lot more about my student that I thought I already knew. After this course, I now feel like an expert when it comes to administering the CRI!

In this course, I had the opportunity to make a Case Report on my student which I administered the CRI to. The Case Report provided in depth details on my student's strengths and weaknesses when it comes to reading and comprehension. I found it very beneficial that I was given the opportunity to create a case report on my student. Prior to taking this course I never knew what a Case Report involved. I think it's very beneficial to both the teacher and parents of the student to make a Case Report based on testing results!

In this course, I got to choose a story and create three different types of comprehension questions based on the story. Text-based questions are based on recall and can be found directly in the text. Inferential questions have directly stated answers and can be found using clues in the text. Critical Thinking questions make us think about why the author said what he/she said. The reader must use his/her own experiences and background knowledge to answer critical thinking questions.

I really enjoyed reading this article during this course. The words "thoughtful literacy" really made me stop and think and reflect on my own teaching as a first grade teacher. Reading comprehension really is so important for our students and we need to be challenging our students with high-level inference questions. Even as a first grade teacher, I try to make sure that I am asking my students questions of higher level to help them better comprehend the story and to get their little minds working!

With the miscue analysis I was able to practice a running record and get a feel for the miscues my student may have been making! I never really took a look at miscues this closely before until this course! I am glad that I got to practice the miscue analysis and received a deeper understanding!
