In elementary school, we would have to take care of a plant in our classroom that we planted ourselves. It was very interesting because you could see how some kids knew a lot about what went into taking care of a plant such as it needed sunlight and water while some other students had no clue on what they should do and puts them in the shade or forgets to water the plant.

One memory I have during middle school was in 7th grade, we had to make our own cell cookie where we had to present exactly what was on our cell cookie and what each part of the cell did. I love this idea looking back but in the moment I was so nervous.

As time went on, I think that I got more excited to learn about science. When I got to middle school, it became more exciting and engaging because we had more hands on experiences. I think that when we got older, we learned things that related more to us which helped my learning and helped me understand the importance of science. In elementary school I felt like I was learning basic science until middle school became a little more exciting with more experiments and projects and then high school I was able to choose what class I wanted to take which is why I loved it so much more.

I think that this is so important because science and social studies are slowly being forgotten and pushed to the side. I am excited to create new lesson plans and have different people and perspectives look at my lesson plans that I create.

TCH 247 was a very important course for me. I think it made me realize that science can be anything you want it to be and that there isn't just one definition for science. It is important to make sure that the students know that as well, that is why I am so excited to teach science to my students. When looking at my experiments that I did during TCH 247, I loved the idea that we were able to make things the way we wanted to and there was no specific direction telling us what we could and couldn't do. Science became more exciting for me.

I think it is so important to get the students engaged and that is what I am excited to do within my classroom. I want to make sure that science is highlighted everyday in my classroom and I want my students to know that science is not a step by step process. I want to make science fun and not stressful for my students like some of my teachers did for me!

What I learned about science from TCH 257

Through this course I have learned a lot about science teaching and learning. Science is being pushed to the side and more teachers are making room for language arts and mathematics. Teaching science can be incorporated with mathematics, language arts, or social studies and this can help teachers make more time for science in their classroom. Teaching science should not be something that I see as scary and intimidating, it should be fun and exciting. All students learn science in a different way so creating multimodal ways that students can learn is so important. Throughout this course I was given many opportunities and resources that will help me further my career in teaching, especially science. Learning how to integrate another subject with science was very helpful and will help me teach science in the future.

My perspective as a teacher and learner of science

My perspective as a teacher has changed when thinking about science. I have always loved the math aspect of science because I was a huge math fan but as I grew up and started looking at science from a teachers perspective, I learned that there is so much more to a science concept. Science can be fun and exciting and should be included in every classroom. Our students should learn about the world around them and how they can create change. When looking at science from a learners perspective, it can be challenging because sometimes there are multiple answers and you might have to pick the best one. This is where I begin to struggle with science. At the beginning of the semester I personally was nervous for this course because I felt like I struggled with science concepts but my perspective has totally changed on this course and teaching science as a whole. Being able to use our lesson practicum assignment and actually teach a science lesson in class made me realize a lot about the science content and how I can impact my students scientifically. There are many ways that people can learn science and I feel like I am still trying to figure out the best way for me to retain that information but I have grown so much since the beginning of the semester.

In what areas do you excel? - Preparation, responsibility, engagement, effort, cooperation, and respect.
Preparation - I believe that I excel in the area of preparation because I come prepared everyday to class for the work that should be done and with the materials that I need.
Responsibility - I believe I excel in the category of responsibility because I am always on time to class and I am turning my work in on time. I believe it is so important to be responsible for the work that is assigned to us.
Engagement - I am physically present in almost every class. I am actively listening to every speaker in the class.
Effort - I believe I excel in effort because I continuously work hard and put a lot of effort into all the assignments given to me.
Cooperation - I believe that I work well with the students in our class. I think that this class gets together well and I love working in groups with them.
Respect - I respect every single one of my classmates. I love that we all became so close this semester and respect each other as professionals but also as friends. I believe that I show respect to them everyday that I am in the classroom and they respect me.

Self-evaluation (Areas To Grow)

In which areas do you feel you have room to grow? - immersion, attitude, growth, execution
Immersion - I will strengthen this quality when in student teaching by soaking up all the information I have while teaching and engaging with the students. I feel like it is so much easier to engage with younger students than people older than me or my age and that is why I feel like I could grow in this section.
Attitude - Often, I beat myself up and I do not have a positive attitude for myself. Towards other things/people I have a positive attitude but I need to work on that positive attitude for myself. As a student teacher I will make sure to remind myself that I am not going to be perfect, no one is, and that it is OK if things do not go my way in a lesson.
Growth - I am always open to suggestions but I feel sometimes I can take it to heart. I think that as a student teacher, I need to remind myself again that it is OK if someone does not agree with me or has a suggestion. A suggestion does not mean that they hate my idea, they just want to make it better.
Execution - I need to listen to feedback and change the things that I have produced based on the feedback given. I also need to engage in self-reflection more and learn how I can be a better teacher by completing those self-reflections. Throughout student teaching I will self-reflect and get feedback from my CT and learn from it.
