Esperanza notices this because her hands are swollen and rough, so she put glycerin and avocados on her hands and waited for 20 minutes. In that 20 minutes expected her hands to heal up and become like her hands before she was working. Her hands did not become like her old hands, so she split open another avocado and tried again,  bbut it then hit her. No matter how many avocados and glycerin she put on her hands, her hands would never be like one of a wealthy woman's hands, it would like tough, like a poor campesina's hands, because she was now a poor campesina.
