Women had to change their fashion style for different jobs they had to take after the men left for war. Women had to shorten their dresses and skirts to make them more practical for jobs such as factory work and farm work. Women also had to simplify the upper half of dresses to make them more uniform like. Women's clothes were made to be a looser fit  for them to be easier for women to change into before they went to work.

When women toke over jobs for men they made uniforms for different types of jobs. For nursing different areas had different uniforms, all being dresses but some with different qualities than others. For some areas nursing uniforms consisted of a dress, a white apron, and a bonnet. While others consisted of a dress with a plus on the front of it and a short top hat. Here below are a few examples of what the nursing outfits looked like.

Before the war fashion designers would work with only one client and change things to the outfits on that one person. Anyone could come to the fashion shows and the fashion was not aloud to be recreated. Fashion shows were a fund raiser for the war. Fashion designers and their clients soon started to travel to different places for fashion shows. Soon fashion shows were made invite only and any company or customers that waned to remake the designs were charged a copyright fee.

After the US lost communication with Europe, New York became the fashion  leader coming out with designs that were practical for women to where in jobs but still looked feminine. Women still wore skirts and dresses just shorter, but most jobs required women to wear trousers and tunic jackets. With their trousers and tunic jackets women also wore belts. Jewelry started to get worn less with these more "man like" jobs. The image below is a woman in a sailor blouse, sailing is an example of a job women took over for the men off at war.

When the skirts were shortened the skin from the top of the high buttoned boots worn before skirts were shortened and the bottom of the skirt was visible. High buttoned boots were abandoned soon after the shirt was shortened. Shoes with heels were soon the new style for women. The heel of these shoes had a slight curve as in the image below.
