These areas lack sufficient water to farm and cover approximately 20% of the Earth's land surface. Some areas like this are the African and Australian deserts, as well as the entire Antarctic continent. Bushmen and Aborigines call deserts home and have survived there by hunting and gathering, while other tribes became nomadic and roamed the deserts with their herds of animals.

These areas are constantly covered by snow which has over time, formed a barrier of ice or permafrost. It covers most of the land near the North and South poles. Eskimos have settled there for milleninna and survive by building igloos, ice-fishing, and hunting small game.

These areas receive high levels of precipitation and high temperatures, thus draining the grounds of nutrients and making the land unsuitable for farming.. They are mostly located between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer, near the equator. As of 2007, there were 67 uncontacted tribes in the Brazilian rainforests and 44 uncontacted tribes on the island of New Guinea. The Mbuti pygmies live in the rainforests of Central Africa as well.

These areas are mainly uninhabited due to the lack of oxygen as elevation increases, harsh weather and insufficient level area to farm. Such regions are found in the Andes, Central Asia, and Africa. 20-30 million people that live in the mountains are below the poverty line due to crop failure. The Incan civilization used to reside in the Andes before they died off, and Sherpas live in the mountains of Central Asia.
