"Until I lit the match that made all of our lives go up in flames" (Brodsky 32).

I chose this quote for two reasons. The first reason is because I believe this quote summarizes the book and and sets the reader up for the tone of the rest of the story. The main quest of the story is about the main character, Theo, trying to live and move on from his past. He lit a match that caused a chain of reactions and eventually killed his mom and messed up much of his dad's life. So as much as that lighting of the match hurt him a great amount, it also affected the people around him in ways that are indescribable. However, I loved this quote because it also has connections outside of the story. We sometimes take our life for granted, but we don't realize how easily our life could change. One simple act, that was done the wrong way, can change a family's whole lifestyle. Now Theo and his family have to try to move past the terrible past, and look for a better life in the future which might seem impossible.

Book Review

https://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-7653-9695-2

Here's part of the review: "In an impressive debut, Brodsky injects her teen drama with ambiguity, and a subtle hint of paranormal phenomena, leaving readers to guess at what’s really going on. Strong characters and a compelling mystery make this a real page-turner".

I agree with this review a lot. I've done some research on the author Demetra Brodsky, and I believe this is her first true, published, and popular novel. This book was entertaining and hinted at many different genres which is a great sign for any books she writes in the future. Not only was this book very interesting but the characters were crafted very complexly. At some times the story and characters got so complex it was a little hard to follow, and made me have to re-read a few chapters. However, once I understood what was truly going on, the story took off for me. The main character, Theo, was probably the most diverse character in the whole story. His constant battle with his terrible past, and difficult yet rewarding future is what drives the plot of the story. I would give this story a 4 out of 5 stars and overall a very good read.

Cast a Character

I would choose Michael Phelps to play the role of Theo because they have many things in common. They are both swimmers or divers so they know that the feeling would be like when you're on the block or the diving board. In addition, they have both had to overcome some things that they did in the past in order to succeed in their sports. I feel like Michael Phelps and Theo have both done things in their past that they regret. It's up to them to either move on and get better or they can let it changed their whole life.

Recommendation

I definitely would recommend this book to almost anyone due to the mixed dramas. The story touches a thriller, romance, and a hint of science fiction which all work to shape the tone of the story. This book I strongly recommend for high school athletes. Towards thee second half of the book, Theo begins to struggle with a certain dive he needs to perform in order to get into his favorite college. It also happens to be the dive that his mom always wanted him to learn before she died. A large goal in the book is him trying to achieve this dive while on his way to Stanford. This book is also a love story between two teenagers, and these two teenagers help solve and find answers from his past.
