There were also 2 authors from physiotherapy and nursing science that contributed to the understanding of participant experiences. The rationale is not stated explicitly, though it seems to be to add evidence to treatments and interventions for severe stress in individuals.

The study authors used a “spiral process” of analytical flow derived from Dahlberg, et al. (2008) to analyze data in a whole-parts-whole sequence. They began by listening to interviews “to gain an overall impression and to become familiar with the participants’ narratives and with the phenomenon.” These interviews were broken down into parts using a matrix to categorize specific “meaning units” and to identify any clusters of meaning. Finally, the clusters that emerged during the “parts” analysis were entered into a new matrix which enabled researchers to develop a deeper “understanding of the essence of meaning and, thus, the phenomenon….” There was no specific mention of coding, but given that researchers used pre-established matrices, it seems that they may have used a priori coding.

Very good summary. To some of your observations, the word "code" is reserved for a clinical definition, however there is an in-depth explanation on pages 4 - 5 in which the work "meaning units" is used as a synonym for "code" to explain how they constructed meaning. There is also a term used, "bridling", which indicates how they attempted to guard against subjectivity.

Design and Purpose: This qualitative research design is a phenomenological study, using the analysis of semi structured interviews for the purpose of identifying and describing the meanings of the phenomena of the participant’s lived experiences of one nature-based therapy program.

In addition to interviewing of participants, therapists are also interviewed, and some data is collected through behavioral observation and review of the participant’s logbooks. This made me question if this was at least in part a case study of this nature based therapy program, but all of the methods used are for the stated intention of shedding light on the phenomenon of the experience of the individuals in the program, from their personal points of view, as opposed to describing the program. The interview questions also indicate the purpose of this study is to interpret the phenomenon of the experience from the participant’s perspective.
