The bombing of the Rainbow Warrior was significant to New Zealand because for the first time, New Zealand felt the effects of terrorism as France planned and executed the sinking of the organisation flagship on our own territories in which Prime Minister David Lange described as “a sordid act of international state-backed terrorism.” Despite France, being an ally of New Zealand, New Zealand was shocked and produced a sense of outrage that an ally can attack another ally’s territory. France and New Zealand’s relationship became worse after the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior. The trade also was negatively affected between France and New Zealand. France started boycotting New Zealand’s imports while New Zealand also boycotted France’s exports. French people living in New Zealand at the time of the bombing was also affected as they received hostile treatment from New Zealanders. It is also significant since after the bombing, New Zealand has become more of an independent country rather than relying on the protection from the ANZUS treaty and its allies (Australia and USA). When the US did not come to New Zealand’s aid, New Zealand has stood up on its own to fight against the nuclear testings in South Pacific. However, the bombing did get international support for the anti-nuclear movement from other countries The bombing of the Rainbow Warrior also led to the 1987 New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act which was passed on by the fourth Labour government “to establish in New Zealand a Nuclear Free Zone, to promote and encourage an active and effective contribution by New Zealand to the essential process of disarmament and international arms control.”

The 1987 New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arm Control Act is a legislation passed by the Fourth Labour government “to establish in New Zealand a Nuclear Free Zone, to promote and encourage an active and effective contribution by New Zealand to the essential process of disarmament and international arms control.” This has been significant since after the legislation has been passed, New Zealand’s relationship with the US has been damaged. The United States has downgraded New Zealand from being an ally to being a friend. The legislation has affected the ANZUS Treaty that was signed on 1951 by Australia, New Zealand and the US.

The bombing of the Rainbow Warrior was significant then because it was a serious international incident that occured on New Zealand soil. This brought attention to our small country, for the first time individually. The fact this act of terrorism happened in New Zealand, gave us even more of a motive to be nuclear-free. Because of the bombing more people than ever support the nuclear-free movement.

It is significant now because nuclear weapons are once again an extreme threat due to the USA and North Korea. New Zealand still remains nuclear-free, and the Rainbow Warrior bombing gives reason and history to our stance today.

The bombing of the rainbow warrior caused international outcry. New Zealand got a huge amount of sympathy from around the world after the bombing. This caused a huge amount of publicity for greenpeace and for the Anti-Nuclear stance, the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior actually had the opposite effect France would have liked, because the Rainbow Warrior II to sailed to the Moruroa Atol in 1996, 11 years later.
