There is a nostalgic look toward childhood naivety.
"Lather and Nothing Else" This story is about a barber who is a rebel having to shave a man who kills the barbers people.
Cultural Themes

There is a repeated culture theme in these stories that is war is something that affects people differently.
"Crane"
"In front of the farmhouse that has been turned into a public peace-police office, a young man stood, tied up. He seemed to be a stranger, so Song-sam approached him to have a close look. He was taken aback; it was none other than his boyhood playmate, Tok-chae." This reflects the theme because of how two childhood friends ended up on opposite sides of the war.
"Lather and Nothing Else" "But we did very well, you know. We caught the leaders. Some of them brought back dead; others are still alive. But they'll all be dead soon." This reflects the theme by how the war leader boasts about how they caught and are going to kill the rebels. It shows that when there is war that some people profit of it while some are hurt by it.

"Lather and Nothing Else" Irony

"They told me you would kill me. I came to find out if that was true. But it's not easy to kill. I know what I'm talking about." Irony is applied while the barber was having a war in his mind about whether or not he was found out, the war leader has already known that the barber is on the rebels side. So the barbers mental struggle was useless.

"Crane" Irony

"Hey why don't we stop here for a crane hunt?" Song-sam spoke up suddenly. Tok-chae was puzzled, struck dumb. I'll make a trap with this rope; you flush a crane over here." This shows irony because they are two grown men playing a childhood game that signifies something else. Playing this childhood game is helping Tok-chae escape.

I think the overall purpose of the texts was to show that war is something that has a different affect on every person. In "Lather and Nothing Else" the barber has seen his people die and he is shaving one of the men who has killed many of his people and brags about it.
"Crane"
In Crane i saw how two childhood friends can be seperated by war and shows how much conflict and sadness comes from war.
