This was just straight profit for the South. Although the South was making such a profit off of cotton, they fed the money right back into farming. This led to deficiencies in the South’s defense, government, and education. Not only was the government lacking, their cities were virtually nonexistent. The South was a rural area opposed to the North’s large urban cities.
