In Chapter 3 the Captain is at bedrest and doesn't like that he can't have rum. Jim goes to get the Captain rum. During this chapter Jim's father dies and Jim is upset. A blind man comes along and tell Jim to take him to the Captain. Once Jim does the blind man gives something to the Captain. In chapter 3 Jim's father died and the captain was told to stay in bedrest and wasn't aloud to drink any rum. Jim gave in and gave the captain rum after he said to give Jim what his father owed. A blind man came up to Jim and wanted Jim to take him to the captain. The blind man gave the captain something in his palm and when he left, the captain fell to the floor and died. The fact that he died right after the mysterious guy came by is a little suspicious like if they had a part in his death.

With the death of Jim's father and the captain's following soon after, Jim must be feeling some sort of discomfort and distress as they happened so fast. Also, because of the fight between the captain and Black Dog, Jim must of seen it as something unnatural to his eyes, thus leading him to maturity as characters in stories often get towards as they learn from their journey. I predict that in the fourth chapter, more hints of the black spot or if not, the whole black spot itself might get discovered which may lead to an adventure which Jim might refuse but soon jump into.
