Effects On Your Body System

Sometimes, people may consume more alcohol faster than their body can break it down into harmless compounds. This causes them to become intoxicated and is a state when a person's mental and physical abilities are impaired by alcohol or another substance. When you are intoxicated, many systems in your body will be effected negatively. The nervous system for example, will show signs of slow brain activity, coordination will become impaired, sensations and perceptions become less clear, and reflexes become sluggish. The cardiovascular system will be effected by an increase of heart rate and blood pressure, more blood flowing to the skin's surface, and a decrease in temperature of the core body. For the excretory system, the kidneys will increase urine production and the drinker will lose more water from the body than usual. The last example would be the digestive system in how too much alcohol in the stomach may cause excessive amount of vomiting.

When a drinker is near the intoxication stage, they will begin to lose judgement and self-control. The alcohol will cause the drinker to be less afraid and fearful. An example would be how a shy drinker may become more outgoing when under the influence of alcohol. One who consumes a lot of alcohol may even reach the point of a blackout which is a period of time that the drinker cannot recall any events that occurred. The drinker will have no memory of the night before even though their friends or others around them do. At times during a blackout, the drinker may inflict harm on others without even meaning to.

People are affected differently by alcohol. For example, two people who consume the same alcohol content react differently. In fact, the effects of alcohol depend solely on how much is circulating in there person's bloodstream. This is known as the blood alcohol concentration and is expressed as a percentage. The higher the blood alcohol concentration in a person, the more reckless and unconscious the person is. The rate of consumption, gender, body size, and the amount of food in the stomach are all factors that affect the blood alcohol concentration.

An overdose is taking an excessive amount of a drug that leads to a coma or death. Overdosing on alcohol can cause the heart and our breathing patterns to stop. A lot of drinks believe that they will pass out before consuming a fatal amount. However, that isn't true because alcohol will continue to be absorbed into the blood for around thirty to ninety minutes after a person's last drink. That is why it's safe to have only one drink per hour. Even if the drinker becomes unconscious, they are still at risk to increase their blood alcohol concentration. Someone can even die drinking for the first time if they binge drink. Binge drinking is consuming a lot of alcohol at one sitting than the body can handle.

There are times where two drugs can interact with one another. This can cause a greater effect than a drug by itself. An example would be alcohol and sleeping pills. Both are depressant drugs and both taken around the same time can cause drastic effects. They can slow breathing and heart rates drastically. Sometimes, the combination of two depressants can lead to coma or even death.

Those who are over the age of 21 are not at risk for developing any health problems when alcohol consumption is under control. However, those who drink a lot could harm the brain, liver, heart, and the digestive system. Women who drink while pregnant can greatly harm the baby inside of their body. Alcohol abuse can destroy nerve cells in the brain and those that are destroyed usually cannot grow again. Those damaged nerve cells will cause impaired memory, the ability to concentrate, and the ability to make sound judgements. Pregnant women who drink are at risk for their future children. Fetal alcohol syndrome is an effect which is caused by pregnant mothers consuming alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the liver's ability to metabolize fats. The liver then begins to fill with fat and that blocks the low of blood in the liver. This can cause cirrhosis which can lead to liver failure and ultimately death if not treated. Digestive problems because of alcohol can cause cancers of the mouth, tongue, or stomach. It can cause recurring diarrhea and chronic indigestion, heartburn, or ulcers.

Those who can no longer control their use of alcohol suffer from the disease alcoholism. Alcoholics consider drinking an every day routine in their life and that they cannot function without it. With continuous drinking, the brain and body will develop tolerance to alcohol so that the drinker would need to drink even more. Addiction soon comes into play and the drinker would no longer have control over his or her drinking. The chemistry of the brain greatly changes as a result. The three stages of alcoholism are problem drinking, absolute dependence, and late stage of alcoholism.
