Stopping the growth of children with severe disabilities

In the article the writer explains a story about a boy named Ricky with a serve case of disability deemed to be in the same category as Cerebral Palsy. It goes through the motions of what Ricky and his mother have to do on a day to day basis to make Ricky the most comfortable. This part of the debate explains what everyone has been doing for centuries for their children that suffer with disabilities. This side does the "right" thing in my opinion. They allow the children with disabilities to have their rights and freedom of speech. On the other hand In the second half of the article the writer speaks about 2 doctors that took on a case with a girl named "Ashley X". Ashley went through many medical procedures like a hysterectomy and removal of her breast nodules. That is only 2 of them. This child was put through this many surgeries just so it would be easier on the parent to take care of them so that the child wouldn't have the rely on a caregiver the rest of her life. This type of "therapy" stopped Ashley's potential growth by 13in. I can see where the doctors and physicians are coming from at this point of view but I do not believe that it is right for the child.

Full Body Transplants

The idea of a full body transplant has been the thing science fiction for a long time, but the procedure made headlines in 2016 a 62-year-old paralyzed man by the name of Mr. Wang volunteered to have the procedure done. Realistically, the procedure is impossible as of right now; the act of connecting the nerves in the spinal cord could result in death. There have been many experiments with full-body transplant in mice, but they only lived a day after the procedure. Dr. Ren Xiaoping plans to complete the procedure by removing the heads from the two bodies, attaching the recipient head to the donor body using a steel plate in the neck, and bathing the nerves in a glue-like substance to facilitate growth. This procedure had received much criticism for its simple and almost naïve nature. Dr. Shaked said that using a glue-like substance to connect the nerve endings would be like gluing together the trans-Atlantic phone cable with crazy glue. However, the ethical question must be answered before advancements in this technology can be made: should a full body transplant be allowed? Many people, like Dr. Huang, say that it should be ethically impossible. Many people have little faith in Chinese doctors; they feel China has no real bottom line for what is ethical and what is not. I personally do not see why the procedure in unethical. If they have the body of someone who donated their body to the cause, ad someone else could use it for the better, then it is not disrespectful to the previous owner of the body. It is consented. Additionally, as a Christian, I believe the body is only a vessel, and, in the end, our souls are what matter, not our bodies. If the technology was to ever be perfected, I would not be against the procedure.

The advances on medical technology surpasses the imagination of many of us. Experimentation like the full body transplant is now in progress to be a reality in the medical world, Percy Shelley in the poem Mont Blank say “that death is slumber, and that its shapes the busy thoughts outnumber of those who wake and live” (295). Scientists and doctors who have been working in this new process are being criticize because (if that is the case) how they are pushing the ethical and practice limits of science, those critics attribute such medical experimentation in china to just national ambition. Victor’s warning about science and how it can push you limit you didn’t even know you had, and it will make you do things you can’t control, victor states “I will pioneer a new way, explore unknow powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation” (31). We do not yet if that procedure is going to be a success or not, but constantly we must find out being responsible for our decisions.

Stopping the growth of children with severe disabilities is a new procedure parents with kids who unfortunately suffer of spastic quadriplegia this mean severe brain damage for live. The “Ashley Treatment” better know as “Sparked Controversy” has been criticized for Unnecessary bodily manipulation, some parents who wish for years have the blessings of bring life to this world unfortunately now they can decide if use “Ashley Treatment”, Victor states “but now that I have finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart” (36). To begin to understand why a parent would choose to disrupt the growth of a child, it helps to know what goes into caring for someone with severe disability. The monster told Victor "I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed." Parents are the only responsible for the lives of the minor because they are the ones who are going to take care of the child.

to explain my point, think in a world exactly like ours but with no religion of any kind exists, so God does not create the universe in 6 days, and the only theory of the creation of the universe is “the big bang theory”, now think about how many knowledge the humanity would have today about this theory. I believe there are no limits of what we can do with the science on the human body, today maybe we know our limits or we have limits things we can “modify” on us, but if we do not keep experimenting in the human body we will be living in today world until we discover the next limit.

I believe in the next couple of years we will be using science for a lot more than we do now. The world is growing in science because of manpower and the knowledge of man. Something new is learned in the science field everyday. Everyday a new vaccine or cure is found, new technology, many human basic needs.

I believe that science should not should not interfere with God's design. God's design is perfect and modifying it would only prove to cause issues. Scientific advancements such as medicine and other things that improve life are great. I believe that the bounders should be determined by whether science is trying to modify natural design or improve it. That line can get blurry in some cases but I believe that is the best guideline.

I believe there are limits to what you should and should not do. Artificially creating life is something that should not be done. Neither is genetically modifying unborn, unconsenting children. These procedures interfere with the natural way of life and have the potential to be dangerous. I do, however, think that full body transplants do not cross the line. If the donar body was given by a consenting person, and the recipent understands it is a risky process, then I do not see anything wrong with that.
