Establish a neural network classroom where students can visualize abstract concepts in real-time through mind-mapping technology, allowing for collaborative problem-solving where thoughts and ideas are instantly shared and integrated into a collective learning experience.

Coordinate a course around student teams solving a real-world problem (PBL = problem-based learning). Either identifying a business opportunity and fleshing it out, or solving a community problem with applied science or other expertise they are learning at YC. Identify subject matter experts in the local community to judge the competition at the end, award first, second, third place, honorable mention, etc. Ideally these experts would also join the students as they hit milestones and provide a little mentoring, or just brainstorm with them to inform their thinking with an expert's perspective. The experimental classroom could bring together student groups from different courses/campuses with community members in a hybrid situation - some attending in person, some via video conference. This offers the potential for learning communities and interdisciplinary projects. Student groups would use the experimental classroom to meet their community mentors at project milestones for feedback, probably 2-3 times during the course, and at the end to present final solutions and have a quick award ceremony. The experimental room would need to accommodate group work that did not cause interference between groups, and allow for smooth and immersive hybrid attendance for group work and discussion. The room would also be able to stream video for the final presentations and awards so that community members, parents, and YC employees could tune in live (or watch later) for the drama and excitement!

A Place to Learn & A Place to Play!

The spaces of "Virtual Reality" have come a long way since Second Life. These days the available headsets make the experience "felt" by the user in a way that just using a mouse and keyboard did not. At least for me. I do think there are ways to integrate these tools into classroom spaces where both everyone is in the same room or in different physical locations. While I am always very skeptical of new shiny objects or words in education, I do think that there is a place for VR and I am having fun trying to find it.
