After watching the Ted Talk and viewing the presentation, I believe I can make a positive impact on my students and community as an educator in an urban school district by instilling enthusiasm and passion, providing structure, an inviting and warm classroom and finally, incorporating fun ideas into the lessons.
I teach at an urban school with students who really need and desire good educators. When they write, I make sure they have descriptive writing words they can refer back to in the classroom. When reading their writing, I always make it joyful and very enthusiastic as I read. We have a schedule for the day that they follow and they know their expectations and I always make sure I make their lessons relevant! Today, we did a lesson on poetry. I had students raise their hands and ask "who listens to rap music"? I mentioned Eminem and Drake. I told them this is poetry because these rap artists rhyme. I made the lesson relevant for them to want to learn more. I enjoy making a difference and will continue to do so.
Alanah Abrahams

After reading through the presentation and watching the Ted Talk, I feel inspired to make a change regarding the disparities that children face in urban school districts. Looking at the direct comparison between the urban school district and the affluent school district in the presentation, the divide is clearly obvious. It is simply unfair that students who live in a lower socioeconomic status area are unable to have access to the quality educational materials that wealthy suburban schools do have access to. As an individual educator in an urban school district, I can make a difference by ensuring that each student knows that they are cared for and have worth. During the Ted Talk, Kandice Sumner mentions how the donated books in her classroom from DonorsChoose made a difference in her students motivation to read. In my classroom I would ensure my students that they are an important member of the classroom community and that they are worth more than the lack of resources that is provided for them. Providing a classroom environment that instills value in each student is one small step in fighting the inequity in education between urban school districts and suburban school districts.

After watching the Ted Talk and listening to the presentation, I believe that I can make a strong impact on both my students and the community as an educator in an urban school district. I can do this by focusing on what the students need from their education and not so much on how they choose to sit in the class. Too many times we focus on how students are seated and take time away from a lesson by telling them to sit in their chairs. Allowing students to sit how they feel most comfortable can assist in their focus because they are not uncomfortable in their chairs. Something else I can do is involve myself with the community and get to know where the students come from and bring that into the classroom. This can show the students that you as an educator care and that where they come from is important and can be used in school.

After watching the Ted Talk and listening to the presentation, I believe I can better understand what my role as an educator in an urban school district would be. I believe in order to make a positive impact on my students and overall community I would need to instill a love for learning. I would need to demonstrate the importance of motivation within my classroom and find what works for my specific students. I believe that the environment a student comes from does not determine entirely who they are but it can mold them into the person they become. I will make it my goal to instill a sense of warmth, passion, and enthusiasm while educating my students. Some students within an Urban district may lack a support system or a role model. I will attempt to hold all of my students to their highest standards and expect specific levels of achievement in order to ensure they feel seen. The students should play an active role and be fully engaged in the material they are learning. My classroom will demonstrate and emphasize the importance of valuing their education and understanding what they are capable of. Each student will understand that they bring an individual sense of unity into our classroom community and it simply would not be as successful without them.

After watching the Ted Talk and viewing the presentation, there are many ways in which a teacher can positively impact the students in which they teach. I think it is important to be a stable role model for students in urban schools, and to create a community of learners where all students feel safe and ready to learn. I would have students do classroom community builders to make them comfortable with each other. I would also have a "Whats up Wednesday" where students can share stories, concerns or questions on a Jamboard or Padlet just to check in with students and build that sense of community they need.

To positively impact my students and community as an educator in an urban school, I would strive to make sure the students have the tools they need to learn. I would make sure that there are books and many of the books have diverse authors, and students can relate to the characters in the stories. Students will not be interested in learning if they are not provided with resources that help them learn. I would research sites that donate school supplies. As Sumner stated, many people in the country want to see students succeed and want to help. I would also apply for any grants that would help students with an after-school tutoring program. As Sumner asserted, the students she teaches could be scientists and doctors, but they do not have the tools to help them achieve their dreams.

I love how in the TedTalk the speaker opens the video by stating how her students are all her children. She shows how much she cares for her students! I want to embody how the teacher speaks about her students, as should all teachers: how caring and warm she is. The TedTalk supported all the information from the presentation. I want to make a positive impact on my students, just like the teacher from the TedTalk. The teacher stated how as a child she could not access many tools that she now can as a teacher because she was in poverty. I want my students to always feel like they are a part of the classroom. I strive to always have extra supplies in my classroom, such as writing utensils, notebooks, extra Chromebook, etc. I never want my students to feel if they do not have the resources they need to succeed. I never want them to feel scared to tell me they forgot their paper at home or they do not have a pencil to write with. I want it to be a positive and welcoming environment.
