I realized that my past 5 communications n both apps were with people that lived far away from me. I use instagram, as a mechanism to be part of my friends' and family's lives, so I use many emojis and interactions. On whatsapp, on the other hand, I have more personal and "deeper" conversations. I often use stickers and gifs as a way to demonstrate humor and create a flowing atmosphere, as it can sometimes be challenging to create such environment with such big distances and through text messages. One thing I do a lot to make it a bit "closer" is send audios, so that the people feel closer and so that there are no misunderstandings in terms of tones.

- Giulia Campanha

Except for physical needs, I realized that most of my needs are reflected though the app Line where I talk to my close friends, family and boyfriend regularly. It is also a place for me to socialize. However I realized that when it is with a person I am close to, I tend to call them more than texting because I feel that I could have a deeper conversation. Thus, I feel more relaxed when I can hear their voice . Moreover, after reviewing few of my texts, I realized that I use a lot of emojis and stickers which expresses my feeling. The one thing I don't really like texting is that it is sometimes difficult to clearly show your expression. Therefore I try to use many emojis to show my emotions. When it comes to Instagram, I feel that my belonging and self-esteem needs are reflected in this app. Having an instagram page is like being part of a community and the app provides photos and videos that you like. Therefore, besides my friends posts I usually find cooking, painting and bird photos and videos on my feed.

Reflecting at the past 5 communications, I can see that there are big changes with people who are very close and dear compared to distant relatives or acquaintances. Just like someone before me had stated, I realize that with people I feel very comfortable around, for instance my mom, we send voice notes, pictures, and call then text. We do that because texting for us feels very impersonal and when I want to explain something, visual aids and doing it in real time just seems better and efficient.

With other people who I don't speak to often, I seem to use simple, basic texting, gifs, and emojis, to cover up the fact that I have no social skills. Thinking about it, I believe I do that because it fills up the "bar" that I think needs to be met with basic courtesy. It is also because of the fear of being rejected. I'm scared to be forthcoming when I could be shot down.

I even have noticed also on my previous post that I have been sharing short clips and videos about the food I eat and like to try. My communication is based on a sense of travel and adventure and documenting the places I have visited and seen. I like to find inspiration on the next travel location and instagram lets me do that, share and post with others and discuss.

Based on Maslow’s hierarchy, I fall int the realm of belonging needs (inclusion, fun, etc) as well as esteem (self-expression ,personal and acceptance, freedom) on what my instagram shows at the current moment. I like to share with the community of the places I go and see and the sense of belonging of the adventures that take me.

For my past 5 communication, it seems that when I use Instagram, it correlates to my belonginess aspect of my life. This is because I communicate with a lot of my friends that do not live near me. Also I use Instagram to kind of show my true identity that I can't express in real life as I have some qualities of being an introvert. In that aspect, it falls under the esteem needs. Same with snapchat, I use it to communicate with my friends, though more on a personal level where I have known them for years. Some are my childhood friends to close friends from elementary school.

Kenta -

Although I am not a big fan of social media, I find myself using the apps, such as Snapchat, Instagram, Line, and Messages to communicate with my friends, family, and people I have not met in person. I usually do not talk to people only unless they are very close to me and know me very well. However on instagram, it is very easy to DM someone to become "friends" with them, so I have gotten know a lot of people on the platform and still have not met in person. Most of the time when I want to communicate with my close friends, I would just call them instead of texting. However, some of my friends do not like to talk on the phone, so I would text them occasionally to make sure that they are okay.
I have just got the text from my friend from Temple University to meet him at the cafeteria. I have gained some followers on instagram and some people have direct messaged me which I have not replied yet. I have also received a photo on Snapchat from my close friend who lives in Germany. I have gotten some emails from the school and other things. I have also talked to my close friend in United States on the phone using Line. These are my past 5 communications on five different platforms. On social media especially Instagram, I have created a completely different persona compared to other platforms and it is very common to do that on Instagram, so I do not trust people on the platform unless I know them in person. However, I only add people I know on other platforms, such as Line and Snapchat, so I do not encounter with the similar problem when I use Instagram. Therefore in terms of Maslow`s pyramid of needs, I believe that I am fulfilling the Belonging and Love needs. I do not personally think that I am fulfilling the Esteem needs and Self Actualization since even on platform such as Instagram, I have created a different persona and although I have quite a lot of followers, I personally do not feel like I have influential impact on them. If people respected me for having a lot of followers, then I do not think it is a genuine respect since how I present myself is completely different from what I actually am in reality.

In the current situation that it is difficult to meet in-person frequently, the way I meet my social needs is communicating with them through the apps. What I do not care about social media is that we cannot understand their true feeling. In other words, they might be either angry or happy. To improve this situation, emoji works in communicating through social media.
Through instagram, I can see what my friends are doing. Not only that but also I can follow famous people or accounts of shops so that I can get new information as soon as possible.

I use Line more often than any other apps. That is because I have more friends who are Japanese who have Line, and my past five communication in Line, I tend to talk with friends who are living in my neighborhood, my junior high school friends. I realized it is much comfortable of me to talk with someone spending time in hardship and overcoming together. So I infer that communication in Line is attribute to self-esteem needs according to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs because I feel safe to talk with them caused by my having a confidence not being broken by saying any words.

Meanwhile, not as often as Line, but I use Instagram. I realized ,by checking my past five communication, I tend to talk with my friends in high school in Canada. Simply, the reason might be Line has not become popular in Canada. However, the reason why Line does not have become really popular is I infer that people in Canada ( any countries but not in Japan) prefer to disclose myself to get others know about selves. So, I realized my past five communication is happened from my comments on some friends' Instagram stories. It can be attributed to self actualization needs according to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs because disclosure of myself is what I am not enough to have right now, so to speak, this is my goals that I want to acquire. Through talking my friends in Canada who has the ability, I want to know and seek what is not enough for me.

LINE is an important communication place for me because I can easily communicate with my friends and everything is easy to talk to.

Line and Twitter are the SNS I use mainly now.
Both apps can text to your friend or family even you are not sitting next to them.
For Line, I use to chat and share Links and images on time in the chat. Also, Line has a function to create and album, notes and plans to the room calendar. This can helps to have a conversation with your groups.
Moreover, Line has variety of stickers. I think this is good was to communicate with others because, one sticker with words or emotions can understand when can not explain in a word or you want to reply but you are busy.

For Twitter, you can chat with people who has a same thing you like. Some people thinks it is dangerous because you do not know the nurses face but it is easy to tweet in a short sentence or word.
Although, using retweet and like and show you like or share that users tweet.

All in all people uses digital tools to communicate to have more conversations with others

Line, Instagram and snapchat are the major communication app that i use in my daily basis. Looking back at my past 5 communications, I realize that I use the app line for making a phone call to my friends. Instead of typing or messaging my emotions, I prefer to call my friend to hear a actual voice. Because I feel more connected even though I am staying in my hometown. I just got a phone call from my friend in Tokyo. I also received a photo snap on the app snap chat and I have received the comment on my post on Instagram. I am not a kind of person who follows someone unless I know them in real life. Regarding to Maslow's hierarchy, I think I am satisfying the needs of the belonging and the love. Lastly, I realized that I tend to make a phone call instead of texting.

I use the two platforms very frequently.
Looking back at the few conversations on both platforms, I realize that I tend to be more informal on Instagram as the people I talk to on there are my closest friends, who know me well and understand my texts' urgency. Meaning they complete my needs for belonging and inclusion.
Still, when on WhatsApp, I tend to send very few texts, and when I do, they are all grammatically checked and read twice. I try to phrase my sentences respectfully and more in detail. Because I have my family members on it, and they know a different side of me that is a part of me but does show when I am with my friends.
I feel that Instagram is much more in my comfort zone than WhatsApp because the slang, random emojis, and GIFs let me conceal a part of me that only the people closest to me know about.

I use iMessage as the main app to communicate with friends and family but most of the conversations I found here was consisted of very few sentences or even just one word answers. I think this is because all of us favour FaceTime when it comes to having conversations as it can be hard to figure out the tone etc through texts. And as opposed to iMessages, Instagram DM were filled with things I like such as memes, news posts, food recipes etc sent by friends and many of the messeges included a lot of emojis, GIFs, slangs and was more engaging in general. Within the hierarchy I think they both fall into self esteem and belongings.

Fuko Sato

Instagram and LINE are digital communication avenues I use regularly. When I reviewed my past 5 communications on them, I found differences between them.
First, in terms of Instagram, I communicated with some friends who are not close to me. This means that I just know them only on Instagram or talk with some friends who I haven’t seen for a long time. Due to this, the contents of communication on Instagram (DM) was not deep. For example, it was just saying “Hi! How’s going?” or exchanging information or facts.
In contrast, I communicated with very close friends and my families. The contents of communication have been very deep; for instance, I talked about what I was happy, sad, or anxious which was very personal things with each other on LINE. Regarding to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, communication on LINE is strongly related to the belonging needs, such as love or friendship.
Therefore, my needs when I talk with people on LINE may not be similar to those when I communicate with someone on Instagram. I used LINE when I wanted to communicate with my close friends or families in order to feel comfortable or make the relationship stronger, and I used Instagram when I wanted to make light conversation with friends who I'm not close with or who I have rarely seen, to get some information from them, or to just send some feedbacks to their posts.

I regularly use LINE and Instagram to communicate with my friends. Reflecting past 5 communications, I realized that when I communicate through LINE, I usually talk about something important such as about classes, assignments, making an appointment and so on. On the other hand, I tend to have fun talking about random topics and tend to be more casual through Instagram. On instagram, for instance, I just react to stories or what my friends posted, and talk about something that happened to us recently. On both platforms, I usually talk with close friends and families, and use emoji and stickers to express emotions. I think that communication using these applications meets belongingness (from Maslow’s Hierarchy). These communications keep me from feeling lonely, because by communicating with them, i can feel connected with my friends even if I cannot meet them in person.

Line and Instagram5 communications I have in those two social media are with my friends. Two of them are new friends that I found in this semester's classes. The other three are my friends with who I have been in a relationship for more than 6 months. I assume that the reason why I had that 5 communication is to earn belongings/ love needs. I am not 100% sure though, I think I make new two friends have someone to share classes’ information about and things I feel in the classes. For the other three friends, I catch up on what I have done recently to keep in touch, which is close to seeking the love of friends in conversations I guess. Therefore, I had 5 communications aimed to seek belongings/ love needs.

I am not a heavy user of social media and even though in this Covid situation, I don’t spend a lot of time on it.
I created a Twitter account for my hobbies. I only followed some guitarists I like for their daily log or live information and a few great guitar craftsmen. There are a little number of them and I won’t receive tons of Twitter every day. So I just check it regularly and it only costs me less than an hour a week. Basing on Maslow's hierarchy, Twitter meets my self-actualization I think even though I just roll my pages down and click the like icon, it is always satisfying.
On the other hand, I communicate with my friends and family by texting or voicing through Wechat almost every day. It is a convenient tool for people like me living overseas but having most of my friends interiorly. However, except for my worried parents, my friends and I don’t contact each other frequently. Rather than sharing daily information on social media, we prefer to meet in person and have a nice talk. For WeChat, it meets belongingness and esteem.

Haoyang Chen

In the past five communications, I sent messages to my parents, because we always stay in touch to make sure I'm doing good. I also talked about recent entertainment news with my Chinese friends. I meet my belonging needs through talking to others so that I can fit in the social group. These communications correspond to the Belonging Needs of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. I also use Line sometimes, especially with those friends who are not Chinese. We talk about homework and share some methods of solving the questions. Most of my communications are about requests and sharing information.

Instagram and snapchat are my top 2 social media platforms I use most often to communicate with others. When I use instagram I generally talk to people I'm close with in person, but I also talk to some people I'm not super close with occasionally. When communicating with close friends on instagram we generally catch up about what's going on in our lives (especially now that I'm here in Japan) or we send each other memes. When talking to people I'm not super close with, it's usually in response to something I posted on my story or someone who doesn't know me that well, but wants to strike up a converstation. When I used to make YouTube videos with my friend I would have some people find me from the videos and ask me questions about the videos. On snapchat I usually talk to close friends or in group chats. I don't use snapchat nearly as much these days because I prefer instagram.

I find myself using imessage and Line the most often. Truthfully, I am not a big fan of social media so I try to avoid Instagram and haven't logged on for over a year. Because of this, all my interaction occurs within the two previously mentioned apps. Imessage provides a space in which I communicate with family and people that I feel I need to be professional around. I seldom use emojis or gifs in imessage and rarely have meaningful interactions. If I text my parents, it is usually to ask if we can Facetime and I can share about my day. Imessage feels very impersonal to me so I prefer to be able to see my parents' faces and be able to effectively communicate. Apart from this, iMessage also harbors a lot of promotions, automated messages, and confirmation texts. Overall, I am not very active within this app. As opposed to this, Line is where I have all of my friendly chats in which I feel that I can let my guard down and send images, gifs, videos, emojis, stickers, etc. I like that the app feels safe because I can express myself fully. iMessage seems more stressful to me as I consider more of a robotic following of a script rather than actual conversation. My safety needs are definitely met through line because I find comfort in talking to people that I know accept me as we discuss topics that we both enjoy. This facilitates a sense of belonging and a reassurance you can't find on iMessage.
