Before you begin, think about what kind of searching you are doing. Are you just browsing, looking for general information on a subject, or more detailed information on a specific area? Once you know the kind of search, then you can start.
Browsing - start with a subject directory and from there go to a metasearcher.
Specific information- go to a major search engine (Google) or specific database.
As much information as possible- go to several search engines to see what different information shows up in each.

Did you know that the way in which you enter or type your keyword(s) and phrases is an important part of having a complete and thorough search. Here are just a few quick tips about what you are typing. • Adding (+) or (-) signs to words can include and exclude information. • Adding quotations around a phrase can turn up the entire phrase as a whole (as oppose to some of the words together on any order) • Using all lowercase letters will turn up more results because capital letters search for only matching results. • Use word stems to look for variations of a word. • Using AND, OR, NOT, AND NOT will give you a more precise search.
