"I can, Petruchio, help thee to a wife
With wealth enough, and young and beauteous,
Brought up as best becomes a gentlewoman.
Her only fault, and that is faults enough,
Is that she is intolerable curst,
And shrewd and forward, so beyond all measure
That, were my state far worser than it is,
I would not wed her for a mine of gold"
(Act 1, Scene 2).

In this line, Hortensio calls a woman an intolerable curst, showing his disrespect for women. At this time, women's purpose was solely to please men, and when they did not bow down to them they were called out and discriminated against.

Signor Hortensio, "twixt such friends as we
Few words suffice; and therefore, if thou know
One rich enough to be Petruchio's wife-
As wealth is burden of my wooing dance-
Be she as foul as was Florentius' love,
As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd
As Socrates' Xanthippe or a worse,
She moves me not- or not removes at least
Affection's edge in me, were she as rough
As are the swelling Adriatic seas.
I come to wive it wealthily in Padua;
If wealthily, then happily in Padua.
(Act I, Scene 2)

In these lines Petruchio is speaking to Hortensio explaining that he has come to Padua to find a bride. He states that his goal is to marry but really on cares about wealth and money; not caring about the qualities of the girl. This exemplifies Petruchio's terrible manner of speaking.

This being disrespecting her and beating her. This is problematic because it presents a highly unhealthy relationship that no one should be put through.

"For I [Petruchio] am he am born to tame you, Kate, / And bring you from a wild Kate to a Kate / Comformable as other household Kates" (2.1.291-293).

Here Petruchio is disrespecting Katherine. He disregards her bitterness towards him and assumes that it is his duty to "fix" or "tame" Katherine. Not only is he belittling her by asserting power over her, but he also is dehumanizing her. Taming is usually used in context of an animal to domesticate them. By suggesting his place to tame Katherine, he is comparing her lack of meekness in womanhood to the wild traits of an animal therefore disregarding her dignity as a human person.

"Thus have I politicly begun my reign,/ And 'tis my hope to end successfully./ My falcon now is sharp and passing empty,/ And, till she stoop, she must not be full-gorged,/ For then she never looks upon her lure" (4.1.151).

Petruchio is declaring that he is now in charge of Kate and ready to tame her. He states that he has begun his "reign". This is problematic because he believes he is her keeper. Petruchio takes away her rights, as she can't eat without him allowing her to. He is training her to obey him and see him as her master.
