Daniella is a fifth grader who was transferred from her private school to public school. She is a good student, but she doesn’t interact much with her peers. She always willing to be a “helper” when it comes to clean up time. She makes sure there is never scraps of paper on the floor. However, when it comes to collaborating with her class, she doesn’t raise her hand or add any new ideas to the group. You notice that she is having trouble integrating herself into her new classroom, finding where she fits in. It is the middle of April and the school year is starting to come to a close. You want to help her create relationships before the school year ends. Her sketchbooks are filled to the edge of the page with drawings and notes. It is obvious that she spends time working in her sketch book when there is free time. You notice that she has started to draw different bird species after you did a unit on endangered animals. With the information you have, how could you help cultivate relationships between Daniella and the rest of the class?

Emilio is a student who is constantly throwing out whatever paper he is working on. Even after explaining to the class how keeping those “fails” can show our future selves how much we’ve learned; the papers still end up in the trashcan by the end of class. Emilio needs to pass this class in order to graduate high school, but so far, he hates everything he makes. This means you do not have any physical material to give him a grade for. Because of this you offer him time to come in during his lunch period, (which also happens to be yours.) He can focus on his own work, and even though he wasn’t happy with his sketch, he still put it back on his shelf for next class. When the next class begins, you notice Emilio getting upset with himself. He is exhibiting the same behavior as yesterday right before he gave up. How might you try to help this situation.

The 8th graders are at the point in the year where they are talking about sex education in their health class. Unknowingly, you planned on giving a presentation on Georgia O’Keeffe the same day. You couldn’t make it past the second slide before the students started giggling. You acknowledge the imagery and begin to give a backstory on the artist. The students are having their own conversations, making inappropriate remarks, the volume escalating. How do you regain control of this group, without crushing the energy that they are having for class discourse?
