- The song was released by  RCA Records and Legacy Recordings.
- This song as well as many of Elvis' songs is considered gospel or soul music..
- "If I Can Dream" replaced a Christmas song that was intended to close his TV special.
- The Civil Rights movement was in full swing and our world and culture were changing. Within a short span of time, two leaders were assassinated. Dr. King was assassinated April 4, 1968, in Memphis, and Robert Kennedy  was killed two months later, on June 6. It was Elvis’ reaction to the news of Kennedy’s assassination that led to the creation of the song "If I Can Dream," a tribute song to King, which featured direct quotes from his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.

Binder believed Elvis had an important message for the country. He then went to the show's Musical Director Billy Goldenberg and songwriter Earl Brown and told them about the discussion. He wanted a powerful, meaningful song that would close out the TV special. The song marked the rebirth of Elvis' career after he spent most of the 1960s recording soundtracks to the movies he was appearing in. This song has such a deep meaning to me personally and always causes strong emotions and often tears. I think his message was very effective, Elvis influenced the world with his music and this song was no different. Given the time this song was released I think it really had a big effect on people. I think this song would appeal to some people because Elvis is not for everyone. He is an acquired taste in my opinion, you either like him or you don't, but I haven't met many people who don't. He sings with so much passion it's hard not to love him.
