Three takeaways would be that the American government wanted the people to be so afraid of communism that they'd forget about their own problems at home, since they had more to worry about on the outside. They also described some situations in which there could be communism lurking but they were actually pretty normal human behaviors, so it wasn't the most accurate way to find communists, it was just generating more fear.
