Bring on the Men

Originally, Board of Governors was not added into this number, but we decided to add us in with a change of costume to boost the noise level of the men at the brothel. By adding us in, it helped to make the atmosphere more rowdy, loud and fill out the space more, as well as giving the prostitutes more people to come to during the number. At first, like you can see in this video we were all too afraid to be loud and get close with the prostitutes, and I did not really enjoy the number. As we got closer to the show I learned to enjoy it and one of my cast mates and I added some ad-libbing into it. By show day the number achieved the loudness and rowdiness required for this number.

This is Facade around 6 weeks into working on it. By this point we had really thought about the power of the vocals we needed to have and the anger in our voices as this is the first time we see the company as a whole. As a Guvnor I am upper class and in Facade we walk through all the poor people. I thought about how I would have a disgusted face when looking at the poor and be very dismissive of them. I made sure to stand very poised and upright like a rich person would. I feel as if by the day of the show I had mastered this to the best of my ability. I also had a solo singing line in this which for the first few times I sang it in head voice, but eventually challenged myself to stay in chest.

Murder Murder

This was definitely the most tricky number out of the entire show, it had a lot of lyrics with difficult harmonies to grasp. Overall we worked on this for many weeks trying to perfect it, we used vocal techniques to help us gain the sense of urgency and power in our voices and learnt lyrics by relating movement to words. In this number Jekyll kills a large number of the Goveners, and I am the first to die by Jekyll snapping my neck. Blocking this death was very difficult and was changed quite afew times, the death in the video is the first one we blocked, but eventually after 3 different versions we managed to find one that looked effective. I learnt that to make the death look realistic I had to learn to go limp and put a lot of trust in the actor playing Hyde to lower me to the floor. Overall this became my favourite part to do in the show as I loved learning something new. We also added in that I am carried off the stage.

At the end everyone who has been killed walks onto the balcony as ghosts of every person Hyde has murdered.

I took inspiration from the rich upper class victorian ladies. They would wear big petticoats under long silky dresses which would normally have elaborate details and puffy sleeves. I chose to go with a long silky black skirt with a petticoat underneath, I also got a bumper but when I tried it on it didn't work with the skirt I got. For the detailing I had a puff sleeve top with another top with lace detailing on the front. For my shoes I just wore character heels as I felt they fit well with my outfit. I would also have loved to have gotten hold of a victorian style hat that I could of worn for some scenes like engagement party.

I could have thought about maybe making my costume a little outdated as I was playing an older woman, so she would not have the most recent fashion.

Board of Goveners

This is one of our runs of Board of Goveners. This was by far the most challenging number in the musical, not in terms of lyrics but in terms of the tempo musically and also acting. The song is very long and a lot of it is spent listening to Dr Jekyll sing, I found it very easy to zone out and had to make sure that I kept in the zone and acting with my peers. I found it helpful to really listen to what Jekyll was saying so I could act accordingly. We had ran this song at many different tempos so we would often get confused at times and it took a lot of running to be able to get it right and get our cues and harmonies. We also decided to add in some movement when we all sing together to make it seem more powerful. We are all against what Dr Jekyll is proposing to us and we are all very strongly opinionated people, in the scene we often argue and speak over Jekyll.

This first week we were just getting to know our roles. We did a lot of research into our roles and got to know our characters. We then played around in our performing arts, dance and acting lessons with movement for Facade. We thought about our differences between rich and poor and how the vocal qualities would be different. In Tonis lesson (our singing lesson) we learnt the beginning parts of Facade and our harmonies that we would be doing with it.

Week 2 - 27/1/25

This week we began to block Murder Murder. In our lesson with Toni that week we continued on with a bit of Facade and left the Murder Murder music until a later date. We added umbrellas into the movement for Murder Murder in the section we had blocked and this proved a little difficult so we practiced that small section a lot.

This week we started blocking for Bring on the Men whilst still practicing what we had done for Facade and Murder Murder. At this point I had not yet been added into bring on the men so me and afew others went to practice for Board of Goveners.

Week 5 - 24/2/25

On the Tuesday we had Adam come in, who has performed in the UK tour of Wicked and also played Dr Jekyll and Edward Hyde. He watched our ensemble numbers and really helped give us ideas of how to improve. He also watched Board of Goveners and spoke to me about how I should really think about what Jekyll is saying to me. He then ended the day with a performance. For the rest of the week we continued to add on to facade and really work on getting it perfected.

Week 6 -3/3/25

This week we really started to work on Murder Murder singing with Toni. We all struggled to learn the lyrics and harmonies as it was very tricky so we also worked on it a lot with Chloe. This week I also blocked my death for the first time which I found quite challenging as I've never done something like this before. I then continued to work on getting used to it throughout the week as well as working on perfecting Boardof Goveners.

This week we had quite afew workshops so didn't complete as much, but we just continued to work hard thinking about our characters in acting lessons with Rob, and working on our acting through song in performing arts lessons.

Week 8 - 17/3/25

This week we added more onto Murder Murder and worked on learning the final harmonies for it as these were very complicated and hard, that week we spent a whole 2 ish hours working on our harmonies to get them perfected. We were also really perfecting Facade and still working on Board of Goveners as we found we had a different Tempo with the new piano track we were using.

This week we really worked on Board of Goveners, I decided my goal over the next few weeks was to really try and master it, acting and singing wise. We also collectivly had the idea of adding movement to it which really helped the piece, we all came up with movements and poses for the begining and end which were performed I worked on my harmonies and became a lot more confident. I also worked through Facade harmonies and worked on the acting movement along with it. We also finished of Murder Murder and on Friday we blocked the wedding scene in acting and ran it in our performing arts lesson.

Week 10 - 31/3/25

This week we started to think about gathering things for our own costumes. We also worked in our job roles groups on props and other things. This was the last week before Easter so we were working really hard and all a little tired. We ended the week with a full run of the show and got given lots of useful notes to improve our performance.

This week we all bought our costumes in as the show was getting very close. We continued running everything and just polishing it, making sure vocals were as perfect as they could be.

Week 12 - 28/4/25

This week we did a complete full dress run of the show and then picked out small things we needed to work on and worked through them. The dress run did not go as well as everyone would have liked and it was a struggle because it was extremely hot, we did the best we could but knew there was a lot to work on. It was very helpful to fully run through with a map of the stage which was put down by city tech people.

Week 13 - Tech week!!

This was a very full on week so I am going to split it into days.

Monday - we all got into the theatre and got used to our surroundings, had and talk from Rob and Chloe and then went up to our dressing rooms before starting our tech run of some numbers in the show. We began with Jekylls songs which we weren't needed for but managed to finish running Facade which was nice.

Tuesday- we kept going from where we left off, teching Board of Goveners and engagement party. We had a lot of waiting around while the tech team sorted things with scenes we weren't in. We did however have to figure out a solution to Board of Goveners when we had to get our chairs on and off and also being able to get to the other side of the stage for engagement party.

Wednesday - we teched a lot this day including Bring on the Men and most of Murder Murder which is a very big scene. We also reblocked my death scene in Murder Murder and it looked so much better and I finally started to master it.

Thursday - we finished of Murder Murder and then gathered in our dressing rooms for a little while as well as working on some other things.

Friday - this was an exciting day as we were able to get into mics for the first time and do mic checks. We then finished by blocking the wedding. After that we decided it would be useful to run some big numbers such as Facade and Murder Murder to check them with the lighting. We then ended all very tired and ready to rest.

Week 14 - Show Week !!!

Monday - today was our first full dress run, we did our full run, listened carefully to notes and then worked on anything that needed working on. We tried out lots of different things for hair and makeup.

Tuesday - we had another full dress run fully miced before our evening show. After the dress run we got notes and worked on Board of Goveners quickly before everyone arrived for the show. We got ready for the show full hair and makeup and then did the show. For the first show I think it went really well, there were some things that could of gone better but I think Facade went amazingly.

Wednesday - we did a matinee show to secondary schools during the day which I think went well and gave us a good chance to have another practice before the big audience at night. We had notes and a break and then smashed our next performance.

Thursday - we didn't have any notes!! We were able to come in later just for our last show and we had an amazing last show, doing the best we'd ever done it. The final show was very sad and I think everyone was very proud of each other.

How I wanted to play my character

I decided I wanted to make my character into a woman so that I would enjoy playing her more, whilst also being pushed out of my comfort zone. I stayed with the fact that I was old, but steered away from the general side of me and looked more into being an upper class woman. I wanted to come across as having a very prim and proper poise.
