We used Birmingham as our case study. Some people were forced to migrate, others left voluntarily or they sought asylum. 

In Bloomfield’s book our city, people migrate for economic reasons and for some it was easy but for others it was tough. Jobs were hard and finding a home was also hard. 

In the interview with Akala, he said something that stood out to me. He said “if all you think of when you think of black people is Martin Luther King and black history month you won’t ever see the true worth of black people.” You won’t see the beauty in diversity. 

Migration creates diversity in the new place those who migrate move to. The British empire experienced this when many moved to Birmingham.

Naturally, the workers in the factories will have higher wages than before because the factories need them and working hours have been increased. But that does not mean that all migrants were voluntary, as many would have not migrated if it was not for the circumstances in their homeland, from natural disasters to ethnic cleaning. Many, if not all, job advertisements would also give work permits, which made the migration process that much easier, nonetheless, migrants still faced many difficulties, one of which is the amount discrimination in all aspects of life, from landlords refusing to rent to certain demographics, to being racially stereotyped.

For instance, when the Birmingham started its first industrial revolution and there was a high demand of lanour, it contributed to many Irish people and Indian to migrate to this place to look for a job, also it was due to potato famine in Irish or ethnic cleasing and so on.  The migrants were employed in manufacturing as workforce, such like motor car industry, vehicles, engineering, electrical goods and metal trades. 
 
With many migrants came to Birmingham, this city became diversity. And also owing to the diversity, there were emerged many challenges that the migrants must to face, for instance, jobs were often physically demanding with long hours in challenging environments and it was hard to find a place to live. At the same time, the empire also will have some changes, many industry factories were closed down, these also influenced to the migrants.
 
Generally speaking, the empire, migration and diversity have a strong relationship, and they will influence each other.

I believe that if there’s an empire, people will migrate to that country if it has favourable conditions. Then, as people from different countries migrate to the empire, it will lead to a diversity of cultures and races. Not only empire, migration and diversity is interconnected, but I believe that racism is somehow connected to the above as well. Akala’s mentioned that the population of Black people in certain countries has been growing rapidly. However, even though black kids may perform well at school, they are still undifferentiated by their class or current background, it also seems like black people station in life is permanent at the bottom and somehow locals do not pay attention to their actual strengths. This makes me think of the negative social influence caused by the huge movement of migration. It does seems like discrimination occurs less between locals, but locals often discriminate migrants. Therefore, I believe that empire, migration and diversity is interconnected with racism as well.
