1) Racism isn't always obvious or intentional, sometimes you can have the best intentions and still say something that makes someone feel uncomfortable. In healthcare, misunderstandings and ignorance can cause strained patient-provider relationships. While not everyone has all the answers, it is important to think before you speak and consider all perspectives when interacting with others.

2) It's okay to not know everything about the culture and practices of another race as long as you look to educate yourself respectfully. As a nurse, I know
that there will be times when I
encounter an individual with beliefs different from my own. After reading this book, I know
that this is okay as long as I educate myself in order to provide the most respectful and competent care.

3) Anyone is capable of change as long as they are willing to make the effort. Empowering people to educate themselves in order to make informed, respectful choices is a role that all healthcare providers can assume.

In the "Three Things I Learned" section, I wrote
that it's okay to not know everything about the culture and practices of another race as long as you look to educate yourself respectfully. I think that this image exemplifies the idea of sharing knowledge and values with one another in order to become more educated. This picture also represents the importance of open-mindedness, which I identified as an important guiding principle to utilize when faced with an ethical dilemma. As a nurse, it is important to strive for excellent skills as a communicator and educator. Both of these roles require the individual to be accepting of ideas that might be a little bit different from their own.

Why do you think the author concluded the novel with Turk and Ruth meeting 6 years later in Ruth's office? In your opinion, why was Ruth not recognizing Turk significant?

I think that the author had Turk and Ruth meet again 6 years later to show the difference that time can make on individuals. Turk had changed so significantly in that time frame that Ruth did not even recognize him. Ruth had become extremely successful, owning her own practice and happily married. Even though she had been through something profoundly difficult, she did not let that experience hinder her success. I think that Ruth not recognizing Turk allowed him to see the genuine care that she provided to his daughter.
