This Language Arts lesson takes place in a 7th grade classroom with a mix of special education and general education students. This lesson introduces students to the Historical Fiction unit of study. The teachers will assess student’s prior knowledge of historical fiction by asking them what they think it is. Students will answer the question in their notebooks by either bulleting their answers or writing in complete sentences. After discussing their answers with their peers in a think-pair-share activity, the students will participate in a whole class discussion on their thinking. Then the teachers will share out the true definition of historical fiction and the elements of historical fiction with the class. The students will get to compare their answers to the class notes the teachers give. In order to immerse the students in the genre, the teachers will give a quick book talk on a couple of short historical fiction stories that students will be able to read in small groups. Students will get to select the short stories they want to read based on interest. Together as a group the students will work together to find an example of each of the elements of historical fiction. Students will write their findings on a graphic organizer. This lesson will hopefully coach students into identifying these elements as they read their own independent historical fiction texts.
