Getting started:
Throughout the beginning of the year (assuming you do the exhibition towards the end of the year), students write (on a collaborative space) up about things they are interested in or the hobbies they have. Made time for this at least once a week.
Also had kids bring in news articles that interested them from websites, newspapers, magazines etc. These were then shared and discussed and it helped some students pick up on something they were interested in. This is something we use throughout the school year in collaboration with the different units.

Throughout Year 6 I have reminded students that they will need to choose a topic for the exhibition. Whenever, something crops up in class I often remark that this might be suitable for and exhibition inquiry. Discussing local, national, international news items also gives scope for generating ideas. We have a big push on outdoor learning at the moment so we have been doing a lot of work in the grounds to make them bee friendly before our bees arrive. Some of my students have chosen this as their inquiry topic.
