By listening to students’ experiences, adults can learn about depths of culture they wouldn’t know otherwise

De La Torre wanted students to contribute to class discussion with personal experiences, but students talked about textual evidence instead

Students need to be told in classes that their experience is valuable knowledge, just like the knowledge of things in the curriculum

Students develop skills in:

• critical investigation of system (culture)

• self (identity)

Literacy as a practice, not limited to specific forms of text or groups of people
