Furthermore, most teachers lack the patients for sufficient wait time. Purposeful questioning takes time. Also, teachers must develop a classroom routine of purposeful questioning which requires teaching students how to actively listen,  how to use sentence starters to respond, such as "I think", "I prefer", etc. Asking purposeful questions requires that the teacher's pedagogy is student centered.
In the virtual learning platform, barriers can include glitches in sound quality, students with no working mic, or when students speak it sounds muffled.
In the lower grades, the chat is not effective for responding to purposeful questions for obvious reasons. I have found having student record their responses to be effective for some students.
