Although very wealthy, he was not particularly generous with his money and did nothing to improve the working conditions of his workers, who labored long hours for little pay. Vanderbilt spent more than $1 million outfitting the union navy ship to be battle worthy, and after the war he donated $1 million to endow a university in the south. Vanderbilt invested his profits in steamboats, he lent his money to other businessmen, he bought real estate, and he purchased stock in private corporations.

Vanderbilt built steamships and boats at a very young age after traveling overseas. And during the gold rush in California, Vanderbilt created a route that was speedier than others and took advantage of this and used it as a source of business and income. He made millions in a single year over this one route. Vanderbilt had many railroads under his name and lowered the rates on his railroads to gain more business. He also controlled ferry traffic during a period where steamships were dominant in business.
